If image files are offline, what Capture One displays can only be what it can base on the preview it creates. If it is necessary to use the actual image file, for instance to create an output file, that can only be done if the original file is online. Also if you want to zoom in to 100% Capture One won't have large enough previews top be able to display that properly. If the previews are not high enough resolution you can change the preview size in Preferences. You will then have to get Capture One to regenerate the previews: it won't do them all automatically, which if you have a large catalog is probably a good thing, as it would be a long job. And the external drive will have to be connected to allow Capture One access to the originals to create the previews. (What you briefly see before the preview kicks in may be from an embedded jpg created by the camera, perhaps?)

If regenerating previews takes some time, be patient while it does it!

Hello Ian, Thanks for quick reply. I cycled through Capture One 12, 13, 20 and now 21. Each update presented identical offline images in regards to resolution (as was set for importing). I am aware of course that an offline image can neither be zoomed in nor exported, but up to version 20 could be viewed perfectly fine. I might need your advised patience for 50K images per catalog... However, the issue might be of interest for Capture One as I see that other people users experience similar difficulties. Many thanks
