Switching from Lightroom to CaptureOne, IPTC DateCreated and Black&White-Tiff barriers
ImplementedHi C1 developers!
I am professional photographer and I work in a public photoarchive with more than 400.000 photos from the end of 19th century, taken by my forerunners, to actuall photos of architecture and events, taken by me. Our workflow is to digitalize the old photos, mostly original-negatives or slides and some prints, via scanners (16/48bit TIFF) or DSLR (RAW) or taking actuall photos with DSLR (RAW). Until now we pre-organize our files with Lighroom, tagging with metadata as author, keywords, caption and more. The final TIFF we organize in a professional server-based DAM. Since the DSLRs got partly better than scanners we like to digitalize with our D800e and PhaseOne P65+. In our repro-stand we do tethered shooting with Nikon Capture and C1 (started with v10 in 2018) and organize with Lightroom.
My thougt is to replace LR by C1 because of its better developing-engine, the better tethering features, better speed and many other details.
But there are two big barriers to do this step:
- In C1 I can´t edit the IPTC-field „Date Created“. (I don´t mean the EXIF-field, where the camera sets the creation date of the shot). When I digitalize old photos, I have to set the IPTC Date Created to the date, when the original photo was taken, to be able to search or sort for date. In Lightroom this is possible from the beginnig. I asked PhaseOne for this feature in 2018 and again last year and both times I got the answer that this is an urgent feature. But by testing C1-21 i could see that still nothing did change, I still can´t edit „IPTC Date Created“.
- It istn´t possible to edit Black&White-TIFF´s in C1. When I change those to RGB before importing in C1, it is possible, but with three times larger files! Is there any reason for it?
If these two barriers are removed, I would be able to kick Lightroom out of my workflow. If not, any update do further versions of C1 is not necessary for me.
Best regards
Michael Schnelle
P.S.
I know that the developers of PhaseOne/CaptureOne implemented the DAM-features of the old application (iView-) MediaPro in C1. In MediaPro editing of IPTC Date Created was possible, but with a bug: the IPTC-DateCreated-field only works down until 1905! Editing a Date with 1904 will keep the field clear after confirming, and older photos can´t be dated correctly. E.g. 1903 will get 2003, 1868, 1768, 1668 etc. will get 2068 after confirming! In Lightroom editing any date in this field is no problem.
A hint to the developers of C1 (if they want to engage with IPTC Date Created): Please don´t look for the old coding in MediaPro. Develop a better one!
Hopefull regards

Hi Lily,
thank you for your answer. I hope, it will be worth for me to work with a future update of C1. I will have a look on the next versions. And even if the developers say, that it might not be possible to implement my suggestions because of whatever reasons, please let me know.
