How do I move image files to external SSD
Hello. I have Capture One 20 on my iMac and need to move all the images to an external SSD as I have run out of space.
Can anyone advise on the best way to do that please? I assume the catalog needs to know they have moved somehow but I don't see a setting in prefs.
I have a single catalog pointing to the folder of images on my iMac at the moment.
Any help appreciated.

Do it from within the Library tab of Capture One. In the "Folders" section use the + button to create the destination folder if necessary. Then in the Folders section drag the folders you want to move from their current location to the new location. Be patient. It may take more time than you think it should.

Thanks for that suggestion. I am worried that moving such a large set of image in that way may end failing. (110,000 images 2.4Tb).
If I was to copy the image folders over to the new SSD first (so I would then have two sets of images) is there any way to get Capture One to reference the new location (on the SSD) rather that the original (on the iMac).
In that way I would hopefully avoid any screw ups ?

A possibility would be to copy all your images on your SSD using Mac OS, then right click on your parent folder, and "Locate...". I am not sure about the result with such a huge number of images, however.
I am warmly surprised that the C1 catalogue works well with 110,000 images. This is the highest number I ever read as being managed (or referenced) by C1 catalogue.

Probably not. Keep in mind that Capture One uses OS functions to actually move the files, just as Finder does. If you do the move within Capture One updating your catalog will occur at the same time. Otherwise you will have to move the file then update the catalog using the Locate.. function. I do not know which would be faster.
That said, I would not move everything at once. Do you have a hierarchy of folders? In my case I have a folder for each year and within each year I have folders for the various events/dates/whatever. If I were to move the images to another disk I'd move a year's worth at a time. If there were too many images in any given year I'd select and move some number of the event folders. "Too many" is a judgement call. Initially I'd not want to move more than about a thousand images at a time. Once I got comfortable moving that amount and got a feel for how long it takes I might select a larger number of images to move at once.
And of course I'd not start doing that until after a complete backup of my initial starting point was safely in hand.

All useful and appreciated. I have a full backup. I have gone with moving all images in one go. Estimated time 6 hours. Will report back later and let you know what happened. 😱

OK here's the outcome. I started with 110,000 images all located under a main folder called Pictures using around 2.46Tb of disk space located on an old mechanical disk. I actually had forgotten that I had two separate catalogs referencing these images. One called Cap2020 with around 7000 images and the other called LRALL with the remaining 103,000 images. When I moved from Lightroom I decided to start a new catalog hence the naming.
My first action was in Capture One (I am using ver 20). In Library/Folder I moved by dragging the Pictures folder to the new SSD drive. As I was inside the smaller Cap2020 catalog I thought it would just move the 7000 or so images. But, and I now remember reading this bit, it moved all the folders and all images below Pictures which of course included my 103,000 LRALL images too. This took 6-7 hours. So, my Cap2020 catalog was fine and saw all the images. But the LRALL catalog showed all the images as being OFFLINE. Not entirely surprisingly.,
Next action was to click on LOCATE from within the LRALL catalog on the main root pictures folder. Capture One went off for around 3/4 hours and relocated all the images showing progress as it went.
So, I have in fact tried both methods discussed in replies above and can say for me, both have worked and I am up and running within 24 hours of kicking off the process.
I hope this helps others if they are looking to so something similar.
Thankyou Marco and Robert for taking the time to reply to my original request.

Thank you, Roger, for the update. I'm somewhat surprised as to the speed. I thought it would take longer, especially with one of the drives being mechanical.

Thanks Roger for the feedback ! I am glad it worked, and still surprised as to the size of your catalogue. Good point to remember about the capacities of the Capture One catalogue.

Roger, I have finally reached the point where my iMac is close to choking. I use catalogs based on the year. I resonate with your approach to solving the problem, so I am planning to install a 5TB external drive and move my historical (archival) catalogs to the external drive. I plan to keep my current and immediate past catalogs on my internal drive and will update the external drive at the end of each year.
Do you have any suggestions/warnings?
