Smart Albums driving me nuts
Hi all
I'm having some problems with Smart Albums / Keyword filtering, and I'm hoping maybe somebody can point out what I'm doing wrong.
Let's say I have a bunch of photos of fruit, in albums under Group "Fruit". They all have keyword "fruit". Some have keyword "red apple". Some have keyword "red pear".
So, I want to set up a Smart Album to find red fruit I set:
Match All
Keywords Contains "red"
result: nothing
Keywords Does Not Contain "red"
result: all photos in Group, including those with keyword "red fruit", "red pear"
....
Ok, so I try "Any":
Match All
Any Contains "red"
result: all photos in Group with keyword "red fruit", "red pear"
hmm.. then:
Any does not contain "red"
result: exactly the same thing: all photos in Group with keyword "red fruit", "red pear"
and finally, before my head explodes:
Match all
Any contains "fruit"
Any does not contain "red"
result: precisely the opposite - all photos in Group with keyword "red fruit", "red pear"
......
(If I just select Any contains "fruit" then I get everything)
so - is this normal? As in Smart Albums / Search By Keyword basically doesn't work? Or is it a sign of catalog corruption? Or am I just getting it wrong?

David,
Here is how I handle a similar situation. I work with a Catalog, if that matters. All my bird photos are keyworded using a hierarchical structure with "Bird" the parent and the specific species as a child. Bird photos are spread across a multitude of collections so I do a search on "All Images." The search criteria is Any includes Bird. (Do not use Keyword as a criteria because even with "includes" the search will come up empty.) At the bottom of the Advanced Search Dialog Box is a button "Create Smart Album." Choose that and you will get a Smart Album that includes all Bird images. With that smart collection selected, use the Filters tool to select the species of interest - as an example select all keywords with Red in the title. Hold the Command key to make multiple selections. Now open the Advanced Search Dialog Box by clicking the three dots next to the Search box just under the Filters heading. Make sure the top selection says "Match Any." Click the button "Create Smart Album" and you will get a Smart Album that includes all Bird images with birds that have 'Red" as part of their keyword. If you want to further restrict the smart album to say those with greater than a 3 star rating, you will need to do so using the Filters tool while the smart album is selected. I hope this helps and you can adapt the ideas to your own needs. Unfortunately, I can find no direct way to construct a Boolean search of (A OR B) AND C.

Thanks Fred,
I'll try that approach... does seem to me there are some bugs in the search tools. I used MediaPro pretty much from when it started, right to the bitter end, so in theory I've got a grip on the basic concepts in C1's catalog - even if the import of MediaPro logic is only partial. I also managed to master Aperture's sometimes opaque approach, and indeed Lightroom and PhotoSupreme. So I have some idea...hopefully.
I've just tried repeating my earlier attempt but starting with the advanced selection dialog rather than the Smart Album dialog, and eventually I could coax it to work. I think.
Your example of Keyword Includes Bird -> empty ... this must be a bug, though. And a glaring one.
Oh well. I put up with the DAM to get the excellent image editing tools. Lr certainly has a more functional DAM, but I can no longer tolerate its mission to oversaturate everything in all ways it can.

David,
I should always double check before saying something from memory. Keyword includes Bird does return all images with the keyword Bird. I either was remembering back before I I set up my hierarchical structure or this is a bug that was fixed. In any event, sorry for the confusion.
