Hi, I'm just migrating from Aperture and Lightroom. So far I haven’t really figured out what is the best way to assess organise my archive. This function by design, not to look inside a group but in a project is a little bit confusing. I would prefer if you can just turn it on or off if you see all content in folders aka groups and projects. I keep you updated if I found a good way.

For archival purposes you could easily choose not to have projects. However, I would choose to have projects.

The key function of a Capture One Project is that it sets and controls the scope for the browser and for smart albums.

Once you have selected a project, your browser only shows  images inside the project. You may have several abums inside a project, if the project is selected, the browser shows  the images in all of these albums. If these albums were at top level, you could not do that; you would either have all the images in the catalog, or all the images in one album.

Smart albums created inside a project only search images inside the project.

My question is not relevant anymore, as the software has adopted C1 mode, creating project, then albums
