Problems with metadata from Capture One

Hello,

I'm in the process of digitizing my analog negatives. The negatives come with a
D850 photographed, for tethering and subsequent editing I use Capture One (currently
Version 14.1.0.74, sessions only). After that, the images are exported in PSD format,
further archiving I do in IMatch. I use embedded metadata only.

For the pictures, where I know, when they were taken, I want to adjust the corresponding
tags in the metadata. But that is not possible, the original data does not appear to be
overwritable.

In the meantime I've found out that the problem seems to arise in exporting as a PSD through C1: C1 probably writes data several times in the metadata and after this, Exiftool can not correct these data anymore.

Since I am overwhelmed with the topic myself, I will quote from a brief analysis
from the author of IMatch:

[The file has] two legacy IPTC records. Bad.
[The file has] (at least) [XMP: XMP-exif] DateTimeOriginal and [XMP: XMP-xmp] CreateDate twice.
So something seems to be doubling the IPTC and XMP datasets instead of the existing ones (?)
To update? Or maybe the software just writes everything twice.

What can you do to solve the problem for already existing files?
How can I prevent it in the future?

The "DateTimeOriginal" is a tag of when the image was created (camera, scanner, computer, etc.).
The "CreateDate" is a tag of when the Exif was created (the software that created the file: TIFF, JPEG, PSD, etc).
If the file originated in a camera, the two will be the same.
I guess when the computers were very slow, it could take a long time before the image was wrapped into a file.

To your question: If I understand it correctly, your concern is that there are duplicates of "DateTimeOriginal" and "CreateDate" tags. The "[EXIF:ExifIFD]" tags are the original tags. As a rule, they are read only. So correctly written software should not overwrite them. This is the time and date when the image was created. There are other tags to indicate when the file was modified, etc. Therefore for whatever reason they duplicated them. The one reason they could have duplicated them is maybe because PSD file requires that information. It does not recognizes Exif tags and/or has it's own versions of those tags and it is file format required tag.

You may not know that this forum is a User to User facility (mostly) and so you are probably only addressing other users.

I would recommend that you use the "Submit a request" function at the top of this page and create a recorded Support Case to discuss your findings with the C1 Support Team. A reference number will be issued and a recorded email/message trail should result. That may turn into an enhancement request for future development or some advice about the best options available to work through the challenge.

I think, the problem is that there are duplicates like this:

When I try to edit DateTimeOriginal with exiftool ("-xmp-exif:time:DateTimeOriginal=1993:08:29 00:00:00+02:00"), exiftool touches only one of these lines, the result looks like this:

[XMP:XMP-exif]  DateTimeOriginal                : 1993:05:29 00:00:00+02:00
[XMP:XMP-exif]  DateTimeOriginal                : 2021:05:17 15:11:08.26

I think, this cannot be correct. For example, it has the effect, that in one place in IMatch, the program I use to manage my photographs, shows 29.05.1993 as the date of taking the picture (taken from first line), but in the timeline you find the picture at 17.05.2021.

I am with you: There shouldn't be any duplicate tags in a file.

Just for kicks and giggles: took one of my RAF files and exported as PSD. I can confirm that there are 2 'CreateDate" tags in two different XMP packets that look identical:

LOL: looks like we were both shooting that day!!!

I found out that disabling the camera metadata in the process recipe can solve the problem, but for me this is not a good solution, because I would like to have these data in the files. I hope for a better solution from C1 support.
