Applying later adjustments

    Yes, it started in C20.

layer(s) can be copied among images and the copied layers are added nondestructively above any layers already on the target image. To copy specific layers (the newly added layers will be added nondestructively above any layers already on the target image), do this:

To copy selected layer(s) to another image, select the source and target image(s), click the Copy/Paste icon, check the layer(s) you want to copy and then select “Apply”.

And as you've discovered, to copy ALL layers, Shift-click on the Copy/Paste icon in the Layers tool to copy all of the current image’s layers, then go to the new image and click the icon again to paste all of the layers into that image.

Yes, that's what I was afraid of. This issue is when you adjust one adjustment layer that is the same on a bunch of images, you have to go in and remove the adjustment layer from all the target images first, before applying it.

I really prefer the old way, as copy/pasting now takes extra steps now and there is always a risk that an image has way too many of the same adjustment layers applied. I now have to double check every tagged image to make sure that hasn't happened.

There probably should be a an option (like auto select composition) that would allow the new layer copy/paste to overwrite the existing layers.  I've asked this within in my community of digitech/shooter/assistants and have yet to find one person that prefers the new way.

    Cheers,

    Clint

Similar thoughts were expressed during a webinar describing the new features. Frankly, sometimes I wish for the old way and sometimes I prefer the new way.

Something to maybe think about: if you add the pasted layers to images and keep the original layers, you might get more flexibility with adjustments by being able to combine adjustments in useful ways. You know that simply unchecking layers renders them invisible.

The thing I really miss, though, is the old ability to Option-drag on a layer to move the entire mask. This was lost when the new Heal/Clone capabilities were introduced, and it makes editing groups of similar images much more work than before. I shoot a lot sequences of living things and so miss what used to be a simple way of positioning the mask among shots in a sequence. I guess that's the price or progress...

great that you can see something positive in a totally idiotic and unproductive behaviour.  but maybe we are different because I do not see unchecking unnecessary layers in hundreds of images as improved flexibility...

I have troubles adjusting to this crazy ‘improvement’ as well. I can not even think of any situation where someone would like to double the layers at all.

The only option so far is to press command + R to totally reset your photo and thén paste the adjustments. This is faster than unchecking boxes and gives you exactly what you want and we’re able to do in all previous versions.

C1 developers: PLEASE fix this. Not in V22 but V21.00000001 😁

    Mark,

The other option a full reset is to make a NEW variant and past the adjustments to that. Then there is nothing to lose.

The fundamental problem with copy layers is that there is no connection between the functions of layers from one variant to the next.

The "name" of a layer, if used AND IF used consistently, is about as close as one can get and cannot offer any certainty for the purpose of the layer's adjustments.

The old Replacement approach was often not very desirable.

The new Additional approach has upset people.

Either way, a batch update across many images could cause chaos.

One could re-engineer the approach and introduce many types of checks and balances. The separation of functions for Heal and Clone layers has the potential to make some parts of such a development a little cleaner for setting "rules".

However, I suspect that people would simply complain that it was too complicated and too time-consuming

I think there were some other issues involved when the process was changed - like deciding at a field level (where there would be no doubt about which field was to be changed)  - whether a value should be changed if it had previously been changed or only if it was still at a default value.

This, of course, is another area of almost impossible to define logic for automation purposes if all opinions are to be accommodated.

In my opinion, the clearest option at the moment is to use the new variant approach I proposed above. I know that many will instantly disagree with me. But for me the use of variants of an image is normal practice and seems to offer the easiest solution to the "don't want duplicate layers" wish.

"the old Replacement approach was often not very desirable"

sure this is why this forum is full of complains about the old approach, not to speak from the millions of frustrated adobe, dxo. and other raw software  user.

ps.:I really don't understand user defending this BS which obvious seem not to be able to fully understand the consequences of this change when you have to work with more then a handful of images. it is also very telling that c1 does not explain why this is now so much better.

Yep, this software behavior is difficult. To me, simplest solution is to provide a keystroke option when pasting to replace layers, or worse; make it a preference toggle.

    Paste/Replace

    Paste/Add
