Catalog on main SSD drive or on HD raid (internal)?

Depends on the RAID level you've implemented. In general, though, I'm not a big fan of RAID, especially given SSD reliability and performance and an understanding of how various RAID levels work. I keep my catalog on an internal SSD and the image files on another SSD, although a high performance HDD works almost as well for most things.

RAID has 2 purposes (for me). 1. Improving performance by engaging multiple drives in R/W operations. 2. Reducing the risk of losing data if a drive fails. The weighting of each depends on the RAID level, how the internals of your RAID box work, and some other things.

I'm happy with individual SSD performance as disk performance isn't usually C1's bottleneck. For data protection, I keep current copies of both the catalog and image files on 2 different drives, one internal to the Mac and the other external. This isn't as hard as it may seem. ChronoSync and Carbon Copy Cloner are quite adept at synchronizing/copying volumes.

Thanks, it's a RAID 10 (on 4 HD). My main concern was about C1 working speed, I understand that in your opinion, a slower drive won't change the C1 speed. I also like CCC very much. Thanks.

I also keep my catalog on my internal SSD and referenced files on an external fast HDD. I use ChronoSync to update 2 other external HDDs with copies of the catalog and referenced files. I rotate the copies between my office and a safe deposit box. Most of the problems people have with losing data is insufficient redundancy. RAID works, and is automatic, but it seems more secure to me to have backups in multiple locations. Doing this with RAID seems more complex to me and if you don't have backups in multiple locations, fire and theft can render RAID backups inaccessible.
