Alternate to keyboard for making selects in C1 to avoid carpal tunnel
I'm looking for an alternative to my MacBook Pro keyboard to star images etc when I'm editing large shoots. I shoot larger, library style projects, so often have several thousand images to go through and star. With my current setup, I'm looking at the Viewer on a large editing monitor and the Browser on my MacBook Pro, using the keyboard on the laptop to star files. This setup is causing tendonitis (carpal tunnel) in my hand though, so I'm looking for alternate options that work with C1 (I subscribe, so use the most recent versions). I know Tangent is a great alternative, but really more than I need and not inexpensive. Looking for something simpler and that does not take up too much real estate on my desk.
Thanks!

Have you considered voice control in the Accessibility menu of System Preferences?
You could enable voice control and set it up so that when you are using Capture One it responds appropriately to you saying "one" for one star rating, "two" for two star rating etc. I find that you can't get the Voice Control options to input 1 as a keyboard shortcut by saying "one" - I had to change the keyboard shortcut to something like Cmd+1 in Capture One preferences, and then set in Accessibility for saying "one" to mean "press Cmd+1". It works!
So if you filter the images to show only no-star images and then start in on saying the appropriate number from 1 to 5 as required, it will assign the rating you say to the first image, then as that is no longer no-star, it disappears from view and the next one comes up. You could rate all the images by voice command without touching the keyboard at all.

Would something like this work for you:
Or if you have an iPhone, there are free apps on the App Store that enable a tethered iPhone or iPad to serve as a numeric keypad.

What about a gaming mouse?

I've no experience with it, but it has six keys on it's side. Would not use a touchscreen to rate, as I constantly need to look at the fingers (no haptic navigation). Do you have a laptop stand? I mean, avoid carpal tunnel inflammation and getting a sore spine instead doesn't sound too attractive?

The voice control sounds intriguing! I'm normally either playing music or listening to a podcast or something while editing, but maybe with a microphone or something?
I don't think the gaming mouse would work, but the numeric keypad might be a great solution. Small enough to sit in front of my laptop with my arm flat on the desk and straight. I like it.
Would still love to hear of any photo / video editing specific solutions, such as Loupedeck if anyone has experience with them.

If you are more comfortable with a pen, a Wacom tablet may work better. Customize buttons and pen to allow for ratings, or touch the stars and color rating square. For multiple choices use Adjustments->Ratings or Adjustments->Color tag to rate a group of selected images with Edit Seleted turned on. Same can be performed with a mouse. Another option is to assign color ratings and star ratings to single key strokes with edit keyboard shortcuts. When I was in IT writing code many years ago, I used a Microsoft Natural keyboard which allowed for me to keep the wrists straight unlike macbook pros and magic keyboards. Yet another option to rate with a mouse if you select 4 images at a time and have Select->Select Next When-> Star Rated and or Color Rated, after rating each of the 4 images shown with the mouse, the next 4 will automatically display (or ever how many you select at one time). 4 seemed to fit the 15" MacBook Pro adequately.
