$100 upgrade after six months?
Hi,
I'm new here so apologies if this has already been covered.
I purchased a perpetual license for CP 2.0 earlier this year. I see that the upgrade fee to 21 is 50% of MSRP. Am I missing something?
I might be biased working for a big software company where we include at least the first year upgrades and support with your purchase, but this seems crazy.
If this is the correct, I'm back to Lightroom and somewhat disappointed.
Thanks, Brett

Couple of things here. I assume you meant Capture One 20, not Capture One 2.0. Correct? Second, Capture One 21 has been out since around last December. Did you have a reason to buy Capture One 20 instead of the available Capture One 21 the beginning of this year?
To answer your question. When you buy Capture One version X you get a perpetual license to use Capture One version X. You also get updates to version X. What you don't get is free upgrades to Capture One version Y. Capture One may offer a discount when you upgrade. To use a bad analogy when you buy a 2021 model year car you don't get a 2022 model year car for free when they are released, even if you just bought the 2021 model. Hey, I said the analogy was bad.
If the current version of Capture One is doing the job for you there is no need to upgrade. That can change if you buy a new camera that isn't supported by the version you have. If you are not happy with the job Capture One is doing by all means try something else. There are several programs out there that can do the job. Find one you like that has an upgrade policy you can live with.

Hi,
Yes of course capture 20 thanks for the correction.
I guess what I don't agree with is that the lifespan of the car is less than a year and that unlike a car software is updatable unlike shipping tons of metal. As I said, I do this for a living.
I was trying to install onto my new M1 Mac and the version 21 binary was the default download.
If that's then business model then its fine. I should have researched better before buying and will avoid doing so in future.
Thank you for the prompt response.
Brett

Capture One 20 didn't stop working when 21 came out, you know...

You should be able to locate and download v20, v21 is the most current. Try the link Submit a request near the upper right hand corner of this page if you can not.
M1 code for C1 v20 may not exist though, you may need v21 anyway.

From your account you are able to download previous versions. Just log in to your account and the download is there. If it points to the current version, just under the current version you will see a link:

Almost every app I've ever bought worked like Marco described: you buy a major version, get free "dot" updates, and have to pay if you want to upgrade to a newer major release. Ages ago, there were often years between version updates, but that's been changing since Apple switched to annual OS release cycles more than a decade ago. Even many shareware developers charge for version upgrades (Mac App Store releases are sometimes exceptions, but that's more of a MAS rules thing).
If you always want to have the latest version of C1, go for a subscription. But the annual cost of that is about the same as upgrading every year.
AFAIK, the main thing you lose on an M1 Mac with v20 is Metal support. If you want Metal support or any of the new features in v21, then you need to upgrade. If you're happy with v20, then just keep running it until something doesn't work for you—like you buy a new camera that v20 doesn't support or a new version of macOS kills something in v20.

Thanks everyone.

Goodbye Brett.
But before you go, are you sure you bought V20 in 2021 and not V21?
If you bought before late October 2020 - 10 months ago - you would likely have purchased V20.
But if you bought in November (or possibly a little before maybe? I don't fully recall without checking) then you would have bought V21 with access to V20 available until V21 was released.
Of course, that assumes you bought directly from Capture One or through an Authorised reseller who actively promoted the latest deals.
If you ended up with some other sort of deal before some time during 2021 you may want to look back at that to see why you apparently did not get access to V21 with the option to use the same license to run older versions if required.
