I suspect that only Capture One marketing people can provide an answer.

Here we are mostly users with no knowledge of the future offers, just plenty of exposure to historic events of a similar nature.

    Jaz,

I have now taken a look at the email and here is how I see things.

Whather one thinks it is OK or not the "next version" upgrade price, without any special offer discounts, has been the same for some time.

That basic price is to update from V20 to V21.

What is currently being offered is to upgrade from V20 to V22, with immediate access to V21 in the interim period, for the same price.

One can either read that as no more than acceptable if one was to but V21 NOW with the expectation of getting V22 for free a few weeks later ... or one could think of it as a late upgrade to V21 for about half the existing upgrade price plus another upgrade to V22 when one wishes to take it for the same reduce price. - Half a regular upgrade price.

For those V20 users who are especially keen on the functionality that V22 is promised to offer it is probably an easy decision since there have already been a number of useful changes in functionality during the V21 period.

But if theV21 and future V22 additions are of no interest ... the decision will be less clear.

I see your point but . . . The Resource Hub on Capture One Pro 20 startup states:

This is confusing because 1.) this notice comes from them 2.) they're giving a 30% discount on the subscription service 3.) less than a month ago, they were giving a 30% discount on the upgrade to version 21   4.) a common practice among software developers is that they give you a free upgrade to the newest version if you bought the program or upgrade within a couple of months of it being released. 5.) Lastly, I don't know if I want to upgrade to version 22. Any and all comments are welcome. - Jaz

Well, these things will always be troubled by apparently anomalous situations.

The pricing is what a vendor wishes to make it. They need to assess their options and decide on a strategy which they hope it is right for their objectives.

Consumers may not all feel positive about such situations.

In effect the offer is providing an early-bird option to fix an upgrade price well in advance of the typical historic offer of 30 days grace period if buying or upgrading a previous version.

Interestingly the email I saw indicates upgrading from V20 or earlier versions.

So for anyone still using V12, or presumably 11, 10, etc. this might represent a very generous (by usual standards) deal.

I don't think one can compare the perpetual license deal to a subscription since they are quite different concepts.

If you do not know whether you wish to update to V22 that's fine. Don't take advantage of the price offer at this time and wait until you have made a decision. It is your right to do so.

I think of this as something like buying foods as the supermarket. If you get the timing right you can buy Coffee, for example, at a 50% discount (or 30% depending on how you do the maths). If you run out of coffee at a time when no retailer is offering the price deals you can pay full asking price or not buy coffee until you can find a deal.

Things could be worse. Last weekend I needed to by some parts to service my wife's car. I found one local source for them with stock for collection. The web site was offering me a discount price too   ... right up to the point where I went to place the order at which point the "Voucher code" that was being offered automatically when browsing the site was removed as not valid.

I wanted to walk away and buy from another online source at a much lower price (assuming they were not playing a similar game) BUT needed to get the job done and could not sensibly delay for several days waiting to see if the parts arrived. So I had to buy at the price offered.

Had there not been the degree of urgency I could have waited, just like I can wait to see if V22 proves to be of interest and may be available on offer further down the line.

Thank you for your point of view. You make a reasonable defense for the situation I find myself in. I find myself agreeing with pretty much all of it. The aspect that I find peculiar is that, with a company which has a tremendous amount of resources, they don't change the Resource Hub to NOT suggest a discount they don't offer. One might buy simply because they think the software is discounted. Others may think this borders on false advertising. As always, the consumer will decide. I won't insist they give me a discount because I believe, as I assume you do, they have the right to charge anything they want. I certainly can more than afford it, if and when I decide I need the upgrade. All your examples are well taken.

I hope the repair on your wife's car went well and you don't run out of coffee too soon! Thanks for your help. - Jaz

    Hi Jaz,

The repair went well enough for now. Just a shame that the main dealer who had serviced it 2 weeks before and issued an annual inspection certificate had not seen fit to comment on the hand brake this year as they normally do. It was quite clear, when I took things apart, that they had not looked at that part of the system at any time in the past 8 or 9 years.

Our stock of coffee is quite good at the moment. Probably just a well as we are being constantly warned about supply chain problems, currently being blamed on a shortage of truck drivers but just as likely due to other reasons we are not supposed to know about.

At least if we get to the point where food is diffcult to obtain we should still have coffee available!  Priorities matter!

My V20 license still works ... if the cameras keep working I have all I need, though maybe not all I would like.
