Importing a catalog from a laptop

Say I'm on a trip and make a Capture One 21 catalog for the photos. I do not store the photos inside the catalog but in a separate folder.

Then I want to merge that catalog with my current desktop catalog. 

I have tried copying the laptop catalog and the associated images to an external SSD and then importing from that SSD. But Capture One has hard-coded the location of the images so it cannot resolve them and there is no way to tell Capture One where the images actually are.

So...what's the best practice for field work?

    I use a referenced catalog on my desktop, but for travel I keep a managed catalog on my laptop, with a backup copy on an external SSD.

    Being managed, everything—original files, edits, metadata, whatever—is in the “file” (actually a special folder called a package). When I get home I copy the managed catalog to my desktop and import it into my main catalog. Then I simply drag the files from “inside the catalog” to whichever folder I wish. Very simple.

    Some people use sessions in the field, but I’ve found my managed catalog workflow to be pretty simple.

    I'll give this a shot the next time. I guess I like to have the files out where I can easily see them rather than stuffed into a package.

    Adam,

    Consider using a session whilst travelling and keep the images within the session folder structure to make everything easy.

    On return copy the entire session folder structure to your other device and then import the session to the catalog including any edit information you may have added. If you then wish to move the original images to a different location, make the move from within Capture One and all of the links should be updated.

    If you move things using facilities outside C1 and you will need to take the steps to re-locate the images in order to be able to fully utilise the catalogue.
