Can I change the way adjustments are stored in v20 and up?

It sounds like you've been working in a Catalog in C1.
In order to have the previews & adjustments in a subfolder of the where the image files are, as you describe, you need to use a Session. This has been the case ever since I started using C1 with v20. I don't know what it was like before then.
These two options work differently in some ways and have their own purposes with pros & cons. They are briefly explained on captureone.com > Get started > TUTORIALS: Importing & Organising. There are also many tutorials on youtube that try to explain the differences between them.
You can import the images with adjustments from the Catalog to a new Session by synchronising them.

Cool, that is very helpful! I am going to test this later today.

I've been using Capture One for ages (started on version 3 or 4) and probably should have paid more attention during one of the earlier upgrades. I never noticed this before, probably because up until recently I've been moving mostly older directories around that I processed before I upgraded to v20.

    Thanks for responding :)

    No worries :-)
Yeh, it's easy to skip the technicalities (boring) when you're short of time and just wanna quickly get on with editing your photos (the fun part)
