Deleting Variants from User Collections Album

Hello, I'm on the latest C1 for Mac and am I'm trying to understand the behavior of deleting variants in a user collection album.

Example:

I have a standard album in User Collections called "WIP" (not a smart album). This is for the images I am currently working on. I add images and variants from the In Catalog system folders...they're still in the system folders, just referenced in WIP.

I expected to be able to delete images from the WIP album and they would remain in the system folders. That works fine for the primary image. However if there is a variant and I delete that, it also gets deleted from the system folders, and it doesn't show up in the catalog trash, it's just gone forever.

If I select the primary and all variants then right mouse click, the menu fly-out says "Delete (from album WIP)". If I right mouse click on just the variant, the menu says "Delete (Variant)".

Is this expected behavior?

I want to be able to make and delete variants in the user collection albums and sometimes have them delete from the catalog as well. But other times I need to "remove" the variant from the user collection album while still retaining it in the catalog.

I'd be inclined to use a Smart Album for this and have images added using star rating and/or color tag criteria. You could then remove individual variants or groups of variants from WIP by changing their rating, and you could delete them from the catalog altogether by using Delete (either fly-out menu or keyboard shortcut).
