this I'm sure, has aggravated some people

Everything Capture One does aggravates some people, because it seems that photographers are particularly prone to an undeserved sense of entitlement, and think that because they hold a particular opinion, everyone else must.

    For clarity - we don't.

Full license and another full license charge to get to 23 seems excessive

Welcome to the Real World, where you have to pay to play.

Capture One isn't a charity, and it doesn't want to be your friend: this is Capture One's charging model, and it clearly works for them. You not liking it doesn't change that.

makes one wonder if opensource may be the way to go?

Knock yourself out - because obviously there are direct competitors for Capture One out there in FOSS land.

    Oh - wait...

Full license and another full license charge to get to 23 seems excessive

There are upgrades available for existing users with a 33% discount. There is a limit to how many versions you can skip though. While it's not a full license, it's still a chunk of money. You don't have to upgrade though. You can keep using 22.

What I like least about their yearly release cycle is the fact that bugfixes don't seem to get backported to even 1 major version back. As soon as they released 22 (v15), no more patches for 21 (v14) were released.
In essence on average new users only get 8 months of bugfixes (since in nov/dec you often get the "use n, upgrade to n+1 for free" deals so max 14, min 2, avg 8). When I buy a piece of software with this kind of price tag, I expect a support lifecycle of years not months.

I have no intention of buying 23, since I don't need the new features. I do however hope that if 23 would receive fixes for things like the strange browser behaviour or non-functioning actions from notifications (issues 7, 9 and 10) those would find their way back to 22 as well. Probably wishful thinking.
