Computer folder structure appears automatically with a Session
but with Catalogs you have to add folders manually (AFAIK).
Click the + icon to the right of the "Folders" heading and select any folders you want to add there.

So I did try and add the folders manually like that. It seemed especially counterproductive for a piece of professional quality software. None of the demonstrations I watched showed anybody adding folders. After several rounds of trial and error I think I finally discovered my mistake. When importing to a folder I was specifying a subfolder called originals, which was created by C1. Once I specified the catalog folder, which is the parent folder of originals, I was able to then see my folders. I don't know what the originals folder is for but that's not where the import belongs.

I guess there's a lot to learn here. Thanks for the reply.

I don't know what the originals folder is for but that's not where the import belongs.

When you import images to a catalog you have two options

    • referenced images - these live in a folder of your choosing on your system. This is what you get on import if you choose "add to catalog"
    • managed images - these are stored inside the catalog. Under the hood, Capture One stores these in a folder called originals. This is what you get on import if you choose "copy to catalog". The originals folder is not particularly intended to be a user-serviceable part.

Oh I think I understand now. Even though I am choosing copy to folder to store my images, those images still belong to the catalog that C1 is creating for me. So on future imports I can still choose to copy to catalog and those will go in the originals folder, alongside my user created folders. I won't be doing that, I like my folders.

    Thank you Ian
