I am close to choking my Hard Drive
Over the past 18 years I have collected a little over 1.5T of images on my hard drive. I know that I've got to cull this mess down to a reasonable size, but I am a junk collector (hoarder?) at heart and even after dumping the obvious losers I have hardly made a dent in the pile. Part of the problem is that I created a searchable catalog, as a result I've got a lot of duplicates between the original source catalogs and the searchable files. I plan to load an off-line disk but I am looking for suggestions on how best to implement my plan; should I put the original catalogs (except for this year and last lear) in the off line drive or should a place the the DAM files off line.
Regardless of which file I move off line, is there a good tutorial that shows how to implement my plan. I am using an iMac and changing the internal hard drive is not going to be an easy job. I am open to any suggestions as long as it doesn't require throwing the baby with the bath water.

Thank you, I would like to go that way, but I am on an iMac and the thought of opening the iMac sounds scary.

I’d suggest keeping your C1 catalog on the internal disk and moving all image files to an external drive. You didn’t say how old your iMac is, but the internal drive should be fast and depending on your USB ports, the external should be fast enough.
important: move the files from within Capture One, NOT with the Finder or else you’ll have to tell C1 what you did using “Locate originals”, which is a pain.

Thank you guys, I really appreciate all the help and guidance that you are providing.
My iMac is a 2019, 27" model with a 3.7 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5 processor, so I hope that a complete replacement will not be necessary..
Right now the external drive appears to be the most attractive route, but hard drive swap is not out of the question. I found this YouTube video that purports that the swap out is doable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtkm7p3qvW0 and I am fortunate to have a son who has been getting into the guts of Macs since he was 13 years old (he is now 56 years old).

I have a MacBook Pro and have adopted the configuration suggested by Abbott, i.e. my catalogue is on the internal hard drive, and all my images (a bit more than 1 TB) is on an external SSD. I have a Samsung T7 2TB for the time being, very fast, and we could expect external 4TB SSD to become cheaper in a very near future. Remember that Capture One needs the RAWs only for export and some local adjustments. All other adjustments are made on previews.
