Whether it is unaffordable is an unknown, because they have not yet said what the pricing will be.

And I would suggest that it is best to weigh up the balance of cost and features. Are you prepared to pay more (if it is more) for the sake of having an app you prefer? I prefer the way Capture One works to the way that other apps work - I could use Lightroom if I had to (lots of photographers do, with good results, after all) but I don't like it.

By analogy - I have just upgraded my mobile phone to the newest iPhone - I could have saved money by going for some other phone instead, but I like iPhones and I could afford it. I have to weigh up whether what I like more about them is worth the extra cost to me.

So if you think that you would be just as happy with some other app, you can do that. But I don't think I would be.

And whether the version 23 new features are uninspiring varies from user to user. Some find them very inspiring it seems. It obviously depends on the kind of photography you do and how you like to work.

Your analogy is poor. Right now when you buy an iPhone, it’s yours you paid for it.  If you want to buy another one in the future, you can, but you don’t have to.
But on your terms, Apple can rent to you a phone indefinitely, and decide to upgrade it when they want to, not you. The upgrade you get might be a slightly bigger apple on the back. Maybe a new font.

Do you like renting a phone? Because that’s the analogy you just gave. In your world, when you stop paying the rent on your phone, it no longer powers on, and you’re OK with that. I’m not.

No, analogies can be stretched too far. My only point in making the comparison is that I am willing (fool that I am, perhaps) to pay the fairly high price for an iPhone rather than say a Samsung phone, because I think I will like it better (and I can afford it). In the same way I am willing (fool that I am, perhaps) to pay rather more for Capture One than I would for Lightroom because I think (know, in fact) that I will like it better. The comparison is not intended to say more than that!

To you, maybe... But unless Capture One forced you to buy it, what's the problem?

Capture One 23 was a waste of my money with the uninspiring features being added

And yet you bought it anyway. That's entirely on you, nobody else.

I won't be renewing my license nor subscribing for version 24.  Good bye!

Just for the avoidance of any doubt - you won't be missed. People who whine about life instead of taking ownership of their own decisions, rarely are.

In other words, Ian - you look at the options available, and make an informed decision based on your pocket, your needs and your legitimate expectations.

    Like a grown-up.

Shame that basic life skill is utterly beyond so many on here...

Thanks, Keith. I am not always called a grown-up (and don't always feel like one, being only 70 years old).

It is so funny that Keith R appears totally unware of the irony of his own whining :- )

I have had the full Capture One licence for the best part of 20 years and before that a limited edition version as then existed. Always used it as my main RAW app. I've always updated my perpectual license except for the latest v23. 23 was of no interest to me as it was relatively expensive for the one new feature that might have mattered for me - the ability to change the time stamp in RAW files which otherwise occasionally caught me out when I had forgotten to update the time stamp on the 3 or 4 Canon bodies that I use simultaneously on shoots. My Canon 5DS-R in particular would lose its correct time stamp by several seconds after just a few days.

I never bothered with Adobe once they introduced renting. Kept CS6 for Photoshop and for Dreamweaver for a little while just in case but now long gone. Never bothered to update my Lightroom as Capture One was far superior anyway. The only Adobe app. I use now is Bridge, which is free anyway, has a lot of functionality for sorting and batch renaming and is excellent.

I'll be checking out Affinity Photo in depth now together with some of the other RAW apps. Thats not whining its just finding the best alternatives to monthly renting. A side advantage would be to avoid the numerous pesky Capture One email offers of Styles.

Blackmagic Design's Davinci Resolve the high end video editor avoids monthlu renting and the CEO has said that he does not intend to change that. The free version works fine for many hobbyists and the full-on version cost just around £250 as a one-off. Blackmagic makes its money from the sale of hardware.

I am very disappointed with the behavior of the company.

They don't listen to their customers and when they are criticized, they respond with ritual phrases, lies or they don't answer at all.

In my country (Italy), all the content creators and all the people in the forums agree that the company's behavior is dishonest.

The software offers less than Adobe Lightroom + Photoshop... at a much higher cost.

They don't say if and when the new cameras and lenses will be included in the software. They don't say what and when improvements will be added.

Nor do they guarantee corrections according to current legislation.

If the company continues to insult the intelligence of its customers, it will close in 2 two or 3 years.

Guys, let's start giving this company a signal: do not subscribe and do not buy Capture One until they are back to reality.
