I'm having this same issue and haven't found a solution either, aside from deleting them from within Finder. Anyone?

All of what you say is, of course, true. At the time of writing I was on set looking for a quick answer and thus couldn't dump a bunch of effort into it.

Right, the smart albums I'm trying to create are very basic: Ratings and Color Tags and usually nothing more. Since I shoot into separate shot folders, I'd like to be able to see all 5 star images ...
