My guess is that you have some of the highlight recovery stuff turned on in-camera, which Nikons software reads. Try pulling the Highlight slider in CO, and you will see the highlights coming down ...

Use the Levels tool, and adjust luminance and the seperate RGB channels. Focus on the Ouput levels for shadow highlight area, and then use the Input level for mid-tones.It takes some practice, but ...
