Had the same problem with my GTX 1650. Updated the Nvidia driver to latest solved the problem.

My master catalog contain 174 031 images and I have no real issues. About 60% are Sony .ARW. The rest .JPG and .TIFF.Catalog size 1,9 GB with 240 px thumbs, no previews. All files on local discs.

To reduce the thumbnail size stored in the catalog file you need to change the thumbnail size in the presets, not in the display view. Then view all images, select all, cmd-B.That would do the trick.
