Were the PSD saved with "Maximum Compatibility" turned on? This produces a flattened image layer for other programs to read. Otherwise most programs can't interpret newer PSD files.

Have you considered that maybe this is just you? There are thousands of people using C1 without the problems you're describing. Time for a wipe and reinstall of Windows?
