Must be your particular installation. D700 and D7000 NEF's render properly on my Mac's.

Just confirmed that the same thing happens on my G4 PowerBook. Both systems are 10.4.2 so is this the problem?

Most likely due to your version of OSX, since RAW support is built in to the operating system. Works fine with 10.6.8 and Apple rendering - also Phase One rendering.
