A thumbnail is a smaller version of the original image located in the Browser section.
Collapse or expand a Variant group if you have a number of variants for a certain image. Click on the small icon in the top left corner of a thumbnail. Find out more about Variant Groups.
Zooming
Adjust and set the thumbnail size by dragging the zoom slider located in the top-right corner of the Browser window or by selecting View -> Browser Zoom from the main menu. Please note that the zoom slider is not present when using the Filmstrip mode.
Adjustment
An icon in the bottom-right corner will appear as soon as any image adjustments are applied. All the adjustments are listed within the Adjustments Clipboard.
Offline icon
A question mark icon appears when an image is offline. Image files that are located inside a Catalog and files that are referenced in their current location can be browsed offline.
View Only icon
An eye icon means that the file has a View Only permission status. This means users have the right to view the image but are unable to make any modification.
That often happens when you are running other than the Pro product variant of Capture One. For instance, if you are running Capture One for Fujifilm, it would not be possible to edit files from other non-Fujiiflm cameras and DNG files. Meanwhile, you can still work with other supported file formats such as JPG/TIFF/PSD/PNG.
Processed icon
An orange cog icon will appear in a thumbnail while the file is being processed. The icon will turn white once the processing is complete.
This icon also signifies that the file has a 'Variant Process History' that the user can access by selecting Image -> Export History.
Appearance Warning icon
An exclamation mark signifies that there may be a problem with the appearance of an image. This can be caused when an image is rendered using settings from a later version of Capture One.
Read Only icon
A crossed over pencil will appear in the bottom-right corner of an image if a file is unsupported or if you don’t have the access rights to edit a file. You might see this read-only icon if you try to edit image files located on a camera or an external disk that is not connected.
NOTE: JPEG files will have a read-only icon if the Enable JPEG Editing option is unchecked in the Preferences window. The same goes for TIFF and PNG file editing.
Variants icon
Collapse or expand a Variant group if you have a number of variants for a certain image. Click on the small icon in the top-left corner of a thumbnail. The number in the upper-right corner indicates the variant's position in the variant group. Find out more about Variant Groups.
Exporting icon
An orange cog icon will appear in a thumbnail while the file is being exported. The icon will turn grey once the exporting is complete.

Hi Wayne,
Thank you for the comment and feedback.
This was updated.
The processed history could be found from Image -> Process History.
Any idea why this (and about 50 similar photos) all have the read only icon and won't allow me to add keywords or otherwise modify? The drive is external but online, the file is read/write by everyone, is a normal JPEG file, and Enable JPEG Editing is checked. Thanks for any insight!

File size limitations
Hi Jack,
Thank you for your comment.
Please note that each side of an image should be at least 512px to be supported for editing.
The photos have 480px on one side, thus, the crossed-over pencil icon appears on the thumbnail.
Thank you! Not sure how they got resized to something so small.
Hello, When I'm on viewer mode. The photos that I did cropping on them are actually showed up as full photo WITH the crop that I did. I wanna see the photos resulted after the cropping as thumbnails ignoring the cropped area. If that makes any sense. Thanks
Hello.
In capture one 21 pro, the thumbnails are really small and when you make them appear in XL size in the browser they look really blurry.
After investigation, thumbnails are located in catalog, under cache, in Thumbnail directory. They are .cot files, , which are just image file indeed.
But they are so small ... (15 to 20 kb) that it's an evidence they can not be sharp when in XL size.
Is there any way to have capture one use greater thumbnail ? As of now, they're useless
TIA
This is for example the screen capture of a thumbnail in XL size, and it is really blurry. The picture of course is not, it's perfectly sharp (as can be seen in the detailed screenshot above)
