Capture One and macOS Catalina compatibility
Capture One 12.1.4 is the first release to support macOS 10.15 Catalina. It has been tested and is supported up to macOS 10.15.1
Capture One 20 (13.1.3) is the first version to support macOS 10.15.7 Catalina.
Precautions for macOS updates
When Apple releases a major update to its operating system, e.g. macOS 10.15.x Catalina, it can be very tempting to download and install these updates right away.
We strongly advise against this for several reasons:
- The OS itself can contain bugs which can hinder your workflow drastically.
- This also applies to any hardware/cameras you may be using with Capture One. For instance, with Mac OS 10.11 El Capitan tethering was completely broken by the new OS
You may find that the application runs on an unsupported operating system, but we cannot guarantee this. If you must have the latest version of macOS Catalina installed, test your workflow end-to-end before putting it into a mission-critical production environment.
Tethering on macOS Catalina
We released an update to Capture One 20 and Capture One 12 to fix the tethering issues which arose around the updates of macOS Catalina.
Capture One 12.1.5 can be downloaded from your account on Capture One website in the Download section by scrolling down and selecting Download under Need the previous version?.
For a full overview of changes, please see the release notes.
Capture One 20 (13.1.3) in the first version to support macOS Catalina 10.15.7. Thus, if you run macOS 10.15.7, it's highly recommended that you install the latest version of Capture One.
Download the latest Capture One version here - https://www.captureone.com/en/account/download
For a full overview of changes, please see the release notes.
When launching Capture One 12.1.5 or Capture One 20 for the first time on macOS Catalina, you will be presented with multiple requests for Capture One to access various different areas of your Mac.
In order to be able to shoot tethered to Capture One, you will need to accept these requests. These requests are dictated by the operating system and there is little we can do to circumvent these access/permission requests.
Below are the screenshots of how the messages will present themselves.
Press OK or Allow.
When you first connect your camera, you will be asked if Capture One is allowed to access to removable volumes. You will need to grant access to this as well if you wish to shoot tethered.
As the message states, you may need to restart Capture One at this point. We also recommend removing the cable from your Mac, starting Capture One and then connecting the camera again.
In instances where you may have rejected these requests or selected 'Don't Allow' - you can run the command below in Terminal to reset the permissions, so that you are prompted to grant access again (Note: For Capture One 21 users).
tccutil reset All com.captureone.captureone14
You will need to replace 'com.captureone.captureone14' with 'com.phaseone.captureone13' if you're a Capture One 20 user in order for this to work.
If you are a Capture One 21 user, please do not edit the commands. 'captureone14' is the name of the Capture One 21 application.
If these commands do not work for whatever reason, then it is recommended that you create a new user account on your Mac. This will provide a fresh permission user set and should allow you to tether with a supported camera.
We realize that this is not ideal - but this is the quickest and most effective way to get back up and running with Capture One and shooting tethered and will work in most scenarios.

MacOS 15.4 was released over 6 weeks ago. Please advise as to whether there are any known issues, especially with tethering. Capture One is the only software holding me back from upgrading and getting the benefits of 15.4.
I've seen your wise recommendation that we never jump immediately onto a new version of the OS, but isn't 6 weeks enough time for you to test it out, or at least gather information from users on 15.4, especially given that there was a beta release previously? (I realize that testing the beta is no guarantee that the final production version will work but it is a way to catch bugs early.)
Thank you.
10.15.4 is unsupported until the next update to Capture One 20. We are still in the Beta phase.
That’s great news. If you are in beta phase of next update, I imagine it will be a matter of weeks or (more likely) just a couple of months. 😊
My lips are sealed. ;)
For information, Batch rename generates crash of C1 20 v 13.1.0.172 running on Catalina 10.15.5, since update from Mojave on McBkAir!
Works well on iMac High Sierra
Strange behavior of Capture One with MacOs 10.15.6!

Hi Shameem,
Thank you for your comment.
As you are a Phase One equipment owner, please, create a request from here - https://www.phaseone.com/en/Profile/Login?CT=SUPPORT&rurl=%2fen%2fSupportMain%2fcontact-technical-support&burl=https%3a%2f%2fwww.phaseone.com%2fen%2fSupportMain&al=1
The Phase One Support Team will shortly get back to you with a solution.
Much appreciated.
First of, I am extremely unsatisfied with the performance of your software. I had previous version of Capture one license for only one year and half and had to subscribe to capture 20, because of the fact that you do not support your 2 year old softwares anymore and I needed tethering. now even with this upgrade my camera(canon) cannot connect to capture one through tethering. if I open LR capture one starts to recognize the camera but that is not working for me.
Any update on this? I tried every step you mentioned above still not working.
Hi Maryam,
Thank you for the comment.
Could you please provide more details on which operating system you run, what exact camera model you own, what Capture One version is installed?
Hi Lily,
I have capture one 20(13.1.3.9), Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7 and Canon 5D Mark III.
Hi Maryam,
Thank you for the clarifications provided.
There are no compatibility issues in this case.
I suggest you check the cable length, and if it is longer than 3 meters, the signal could be weak. Also, make sure you do not have any extensions.
Make sure the proper camera type is enabled in Preferences > Capture > Providers.
If that is not the case, make sure that you grant Capture One proper accessibility and disk access in Apple System Preferences. Go to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy. Unlock the window by clicking on the lock and entering your password. Then add Capture One by clicking the "+" button. Do this for both Accessibility and Full Disk Access options.
Hi Maryam,
Thank you for the clarification provided.
Most likely this is related to the permissions then.
Even though you have given Capture One full access, sometimes you need to give Capture One permission to 'access files on a removable volume'.
Run these commands one at a time in the Terminal to reset permissions ('captureone13' is correct for version 20):
tccutil reset SystemPolicyRemovableVolumes com.captureone.captureone13
tccutil reset Photos com.captureone.captureone13
Then reopen Capture One and connect the camera. Click Allow.
Hi Lily,
I am bearing the good news that finally tethering is working :)
The two commands you sent me did not work alone; However when I used all these 3 command at the same time it worked:
tccutil reset SystemPolicyRemovableVolumes com.captureone.captureone13
tccutil reset Photos com.captureone.captureone13
tccutil reset All com.captureone.captureone13
Thank you for your support :)
Maryam
I was too fast to celebrate.
it worked first time but I did some test (opening and closing Capture one or turning camera on and off) and once the connection is lost (either capture one is closed or camera is off or cable is connected and disconnected), it doesn't recognize the camera again. I had to re-run the commands several time in order to make it work again. :/
Thanks worked a treat. I was so confused after I upgraded Macs.
Just a heads up. In the command line, replace the 13 with a 14 if you're running Capture One 21.
Sadly no luck with Canon on M1 Macs.
I need to know have you giys had issues
With GFX 100S on C1 21 and Catalina latest version?
Thanks
I have latest version of Capture one (14.14.1.6) and Catalina (v 10.15.7) and I still have issue tethering my camera using Capture one after a year. The only way I can connect it without an issue is removing my memory cards from my camera (which is not ideal since sometimes I would like to have a back up). I am hoping this might help your team identify the issue and resolve it. I also have to add that if I put an empty memory card it works fine.
I came here as I was struggling with the combination Leica SL2, MacBook Pro M1 and C1 22.
The following steps worked for me:
tccutil reset SystemPolicyRemovableVolumes com.captureone.captureone15
tccutil reset Photos com.captureone.captureone15
tccutil reset All com.captureone.captureone15
all together in the terminal, not step by step - it works only that way. Replace 15 with 14 for C1 21
Good luck
Rob
I need some assistance please. I have Mac OSCatalina 10.15.7 and Capture One 20 Pro version 13.0.3.29. I originally purchased Capture One so I could tether but gave up after being unsuccessful getting my camera to appear in Capture One. I do believe I had at one point hit DONT ALLOW on one or possibly more of the prompts. I don't have the foggiest idea about these terminal commands but I'd like to try just to see if that works as I am desperate to start tethering again. Given I can find where to put these commands in - which commands should I enter?
Hey Cami,
sorry for the late response. You have to go to the Mac launchpad, type "ter" , then you see the terminal application, klick on it, the terminal window opens up and you can copy and paste the three lines from above into the window and hit enter. You can close the terminal window afterwards.
Everything should be reset in C1. When you open C1 the next time you give C1 approval in the respective Mac OS pop up that will show up . That's what I did. Screenshots attached.
Cheers
Rob
Thanks Rob - I SO appreciate your response. I just tried that and when I copied and pasted that into Terminal and hit enter, I got this: So now I'm not sure what to do. Just copy and paste the "chsh -s" ....line into terminal? I don't like messing with things I do not understand so it makes me a bit nervous. I did go and open C1 but nothing happened other than the fact that it opened like it always does. ETA: I changed the default shell to zsh and ran the command it said to but I still get an error
OSStatus error -10814 Do I need to change the numbers that you used since I'm on C120?
Cami,
This is probably because of the number which indicates the respective C1 version - 15 is the lates version C1 (22) - so you have C1 (20) as I understood from your first comment, you would have to replace 15 with 13 (one of the first comments in this thread was with 13. It's a techie-thing with some number-mapping according to the version of C1. Capture One should just build in a function in the software with a simple reset button which does exactly what we are achieving here with this manual workaround. It's not user friendly at all, but in the end it was successful for me. Probably the just have other priorities with their software at the moment. Sometimes one can get really lost in those trial and error cases... but in the end it's the best software...
So this would be your text to copy for C1 (20)
tccutil reset SystemPolicyRemovableVolumes com.captureone.captureone13
tccutil reset Photos com.captureone.captureone13
tccutil reset All com.captureone.captureone13
Hope it works.
Cheers
Rob
dang it. Changed it to 13 but still getting an error/operation couldn't be completed. This is so frustrating but I appreciate you taking the time to try and help me.
So you are getting the same error? There are three command, the last one in your screenshot above hat no error. Maybe you try them one by one. Maybe it's already reset, try restarting C1 and see if anything has changed. It's really a trial and error thing and there is obviously no good communication between C1 and Apple - the reason is Apples OS change, I believe C1 did what they were able to do at this point, don't really know. It is frustrating, I totally agree.
Let me know your results, Cami. I have to go for now, I'm in Germany and you in the US I believe. Rob
ETA: I ended up running the upgrade/update to C120 13.1.4 (I will not spend another penny on this software until I can get it to work) and also created a new user on my MBP as suggested. I restarted and opened C1 under my new user id and it did ask me once to allow whatever program(s) it needs access to and I said allow. We will see once I get back to the studio tomorrow. Half tempted to drive back to pick up my camera and tethering cord because I'm so anxious to see if it will work. Will let you know.
Yes, I'm in US. Thanks again. I tried entering each line individually and got an error after each one. I'm going to try restarting C1. If it doesn't work I'll have to go back to the drawing board.
Thanks again,
Cami
