It is possible to save images to a memory card, as well as saving to your workstation, with supported Canon and Nikon cameras. You may find this works with other camera brands, but it is dependant on the settings available, as well as the camera firmware being used.
With the release of Capture One Pro (16.3.2), there is a new preference that sets the default for the Save To (for Canon) or Recording Media (for Nikon) camera settings to Capture One + Card when a card is present within the camera. If the card is not present or if the preference is disabled, the default option is Capture One. For details see Saving to Memory Card and Capture One
You can activate this by going to the Tether tool tab > Camera Settings and then changing the following option:
Tether (tool tab) > Camera Settings > Save To
The name of your memory card will change depending on what type of card it is you are using. In this instance, a CF express card was being used.
This provides a convenient backup method, as well as enabling you to see and review the images on the camera display. This functionality is also available when using wireless tethering.
N.B. Enabling this feature will affect the waiting time when connecting the camera, as your operating system will index the content of the card. The more images that are on the card, the longer this can take.
Other camera brands
Some cameras have the ability to save images to a memory card during tethering. Those are Sony A7 III / A7R III / A9 and some Fujifilm cameras, dependant on individually adjusted camera settings and the camera firmware. This functionality however, is only fully supported with Canon and Nikon cameras.

It´s possible zu set it in the "Shoot" option. But everytime the iPad or the Macbook lost the connection i have to set it up everytime... and thats a mess. Because then sometimes the images are on the cam as backup and sometimes not.. ;)

Why should it not be as selected and everytime you started C1 on iPad or Mac.
Because its annoying everytime you connect the camera you have to go in the same settings menu and select what you want... and mostly i prefere a backup on my CF or SD card.
It's infuriating that they haven't changed this feature. It gets so confusing when some images are on the ipad only, and the file numbers never match up, so you can't easily figure it out. I do not trust the ipad to not freeze up or something, and lose photos before I can back them up. Argh!
I agree with Niko Zuparic. Capture One should retain the last settings used for tethering including selection for where to store the images.
Jack-W .. video illustrating this may be outdated? It shows CFe. I think the current menu uses different names?
Walter Rowe I'll check when I next get my hands on the camera. Thanks for the heads up. :)
This is what I see.
Thank you Capture One! It works for Nikon and Canon finally :)
Hallalujah! I updated Tuesday morning, praying that they fixed this and lo and behold, it now automatically saves to both card and ipad! I shot 4 locations in 2 days, and it worked seamlessly. The only freaky thing that happened was that at some point, I pressed play on the back of my camera to review, and it said "no images". It did that a few times before in the past. I turned the camera off, removed and re inserted the battery, and the images were still all on the card. Panic-inducing, but just a glitch. (Canon R5) Thank you Capture One! (but this should have always been available..)
With my Nikon Z8 + Nikon Z6ii it doesn't work to use the play button on the camera at the same time when I'm tethering..
Is there a way to turn this off by default and not having to do this manually everytime you turn on the camera while in a session.
Article has been updated for those that haven't read it yet :)
Feature is awesome! Saving to Memory Card and Capture One - Capture One
The camera disconnected randomly whenever this feature is on or cards in the camera. I would highly suggest NOT to use it since only Canon and Nikon are officially supported. Bummer for other users.
