Release highlights
Capture One 21 (14.2.0) is a release containing new hardware support, new operating system support, new camera and lens support, and important bug fixes.
Apple Silicon (M1) and Metal support
Capture One 21 (14.2.0) is natively supported on Apple Silicon (M1) machines. Additionally, Hardware Acceleration on Apple Silicon (M1) machines will run through Metal. Hardware Acceleration on Windows and Intel-based Apple machines still runs through OpenCL.
Other
Capture One 21 (14.2.0) also contains general bug fixes and under-the-hood tweaks.
FireWire support removed
FireWire tethering is no longer support in Capture One 21 (14.2.0) and forward.
Apple and Microsoft have made updates to their architecture and we can no longer maintain firewire tethering support on ARM and Intel based computers from Capture One 21 (14.2.0).
It will still be possible to use Capture One 21 (14.1.1) and earlier versions for firewire tethering.
To use firewire tethering make sure to run the below OS versions:
- MacOS versions prior to 11.0 (Big Sur)
- Windows 10 versions prior to Windows 10 build 1903
JPEG2000 & JPEG XR support removed
JPEG2000 and JPEG XR are no longer supported in Capture One 21 (14.2.0) and forward. Users will no longer be able to view, edit, or export to these formats. Existing Process Recipes using these formats have been automatically migrated to uncompressed 16-bit TIFF instead. This avoids any unwanted loss of quality.

*Support for Capture One 21 on Windows 10 is supported for builds supporting .NET 4.7 - This is currently from build 1607 through to build 20H2.
Recommended system requirements
If working with high-resolution images and doing calculation-heavy adjustments we recommend the following:
- Intel CPU with 4+ cores
- 16+ GB of RAM
- Solid State Disk (SSD)
- NVIDIA or AMD GPU with 8GB+ RAM
- Calibrated monitor with at least 1920x1200, 24-bit resolution at 96dpi
4k / 5k monitors
Due to the significant additional calculation overhead, systems using 4k/5k monitors will require additional resources in addition to the above-recommended spec (both in GPU and CPU power). For a professional experience, we recommend at least doubling the specification above for these configurations.
Installation
Capture One 21 is compatible with the earlier 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, 10.x, 11.x, 12.x versions. It is recommended to migrate images from 4.x, 5.x., and 6.x to version 8.x before opening them in 21. It is generally recommended that you only install one version of Capture One on any single computer. A single-user license allows up to 2 activations on computers that you own or of which you are the principal user. The license can be used with both Windows and Mac platforms. Multi-user licenses are also available from the Capture One web shop or from your retailer. Please read the release notes carefully before you install Capture One.
Install on Windows
To install the software please follow the procedure below.
- Download the application from the Capture One website.
- Run the executable software install file (.exe).
- Carefully read and accept the license agreement presented.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Capture One will initiate the installation of Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.7 if you do not already have it.
Install on macOS
To install the software please follow the procedure below.
- Download the application from the Capture One website.
- Open the Capture One disk icon (.dmg).
- Carefully read and accept the license agreement presented.
- Drag the Capture One icon to the Applications folder.
- Open Capture One from your Applications folder.
Manual update to the latest version
It is important to keep Capture One software updated. After the activation and registration, you will usually receive a newsletter reminder that an update is ready for download, although it can be more convenient to choose Capture One -> Check for Updates (Help -> Check for Updates on Windows). If your Capture One application is downloaded from www.captureone.com, it will always be the latest version. You can also schedule an automated update if needed by navigating to Capture One -> Preferences (Edit -> Preferences on Windows).
Recommendations and limitations
For all users

When you have disconnected a camera, do not reconnect a camera until the Camera tool status changes to "No Camera Attached".

DNG support not optimized for some cameras.
For other camera users

The following functionality is not supported for Fujifilm X-trans RAW files: processing/exporting to DNG.

Some cameras provide multishot functionality by way of (e.g.) multiple exposures or pixel shifting. In most cases, the functionality will not be available in Capture One, however, a single RAW file from the “stack” may be viewable and editable in Capture One (as if it was a shot in single Capture mode).
For digital back users
-
Unless otherwise specified for your Phase One camera system, do not open the shutter on the camera prior to opening the Live View window. Doing so will generate errors on the digital back after closing the Live View window. The recommended procedure for using Live View is to first open the Live View window, then open the shutter on the camera, use Live View as desired, when done, close the shutter on the camera, and close the Live View window.

Focus controls for iXR and iXA cameras are only supported by IQ and Credo backs.
Known issues
Find a list of known issues for Capture One at the time of shipping.
All users
- Browsing folders containing unsupported image files may affect application performance.
- Previews from earlier versions of Capture One may be updated. In some cases, this can affect the application performance the first time images are viewed in this version of Capture One.
- Using a non-US laptop keyboard might be preferable to change some of the standard keyboard shortcuts.
- Editing images in external applications other than Adobe Photoshop might result in unexpected behavior.
- Operation under virtualization software (e.g. Parallels, Hackintosh, etc) may cause instability. We do not recommend you use these OS configurations.
Mac users
- Live View over USB can stall without the use of a repeater.
- M1-macs only: Tethering does not work on Thunderbolt ports using USB3.x cables with some Canon cameras. Workaround is to use USB2 cables for the time being.
Windows users

Windows drivers are required for some older models of Canon DSLR cameras to be able to shoot tethered. These drivers are available from Canon’s website.

Importing a catalog can result in the last picture not getting imported.

Operation under RAMDisk by Dataram is known to cause issues with disk labeling. Capture One is not supported with this configuration.

If you have Bonjour 2.0.3 installed, you may experience problems with Capture Pilot. Bonjour 2.0.2 (shipping with Capture One 9) and 2.0.4 (shipped with iTunes) have been tested to work with Capture Pilot. To check the version number of Bonjour, go to 'Control Panel' and select ‘Programs and Features’.

HEIC/HEIF support
Capture One supports HEIC/HEIF 8-bit files to the extent that the operating system supports the files. If you are on a Windows computer, you might need to download the two extensions “HEVC Video Extensions” and “HEIF Image Extensions” from Microsoft to enable support in Capture One.
Capture One DNG colors
DNG files from camera models with native support in Capture One will per default have their native Capture One colors applied. DNG files from camera models that are not natively supported in Capture One will have generic DNG Standard colors applied.
We do not support adjustments and settings from other applications embedded in DNG files.
Other file support
TIF/JPG/PSD/PNG files that are not in RGB color space cannot be adjusted within Capture One and will be read-only.
Layered Tiff: Capture One 9.1 onward can support Tiff files with alpha channel or layers saved in the file (from other apps like Adobe Photoshop) but for viewing purposes only. Reprocessing the image will result in a new flattened image.
PSD: Capture 10.1 onward can support PSD files in the viewer. The PSD can contain any adjustments, layers, text or smart objects but must be saved in Photoshop with “maximize compatibility” enabled. Reprocessing the image from Capture One will result in a new flattened image.
File size limitations
- Smallest supported file for viewing: minimum side of 16px.
- Smallest supported file for editing: minimum side of 512px.
- Largest supported file: Width x Height must be smaller than 40000 x 20000 pixels or sum thereof.
Camera support
RAW files support with known limitations listed in the notes section is available here. Special or auxiliary modes (like pixel shift) are only supported if noted. I have just updated to 14.2 under macOS 10.15.7 and what do I find? No more graphics support as in Version 14.1! And also no support for Metal under Catalina 10.15.7.
CO-company, this is an impertinence, you have dropped the hardware acceleration with this update! Please remove this measure immediately by a new update and furthermore I ask for the support of the Metal hardware acceleration also under macOS Catalina 10.15.7.
Open letter to CEO Rafael Orta
Hi Rafael Orta,
I recently read an interview you did with Jermey Gray. Some of your statements about the upcoming improved customer orientation not only caught my attention, but the statements in this regard made me happy and really hopeful that things will get better now.
Since the interview, two updates of Capture One 21 Pro have been released and both updates have unfortunately disappointed me again, because contrary to the many wishes expressed in the "feature request" forum, only a few new lens profiles were delivered with the last two updates.
Rafael Orta, this is the opposite of what you announced in the interview. Furthermore - and for a long time now - requests from customers are persistently igonored. I have been waiting for lens profiles for the new Canon RF lenses for almost two years, and so far only five have appeared. Unfortunately, profiles for the so important RF 24-70mm, Rf 70-200mm as well as RF 85mm are still missing.
I therefore ask for your opinion.

This is bad... macusers are waiting for metal support for years now. Now, because you had to move because of the apu-revolution at apple, you continue to ignore intel macs. I can't image it would be too hard to enable metal for intel-based macs. I' am not a developer, so maybe there are reasons for not releasing the update with metal for intel in the first place. Is there a timeline? Not everyone can switch this year!
Man was I waiting for my idle sitting M1 MacBook to finally become able to tether... But nope... What the hell have you been doing all this time? And why is abode able to handle this without a problem. Cmon guys!
The silliest off all is to suggest a usb2 cable!! The MacBook only have usb3 ports.
How long will it take you to solve this?
So much moaning on here, it states in the release notes about the USB issues so why complain? As for Metal, and older Mac OS releases, Apple drops support and sometimes you can't keep legacy code as it will impact on other aspects of the software.
Srsly? Older Macs? M1 MBP or MPs are not announced yet. We are talking about Macs bought weeks ago .. metal is out for ages. Ppl are changing systems once in 4-5 years. Metal support is way too late, but at least it has landed … so give it to everyone. Intel users pay the same fkg money. This is not a matter of some legacy weird stuff from decades ago.
The keyboard shortcuts for "Increase Thumbnail Size" and "Decrease Thumbnail Size" are still broken in the Windows version. They have some very, very limited effect, but do not work as intended.
The respective bug report was submitted over a year ago. This update saw only four (4) bug fixes for the Windows version but there are so many more issues to address.
While fixing something trivial like broken keyboard shortcuts would take less than an hour, it would have a very positive impact on user productivity.
I could expand this into a long list of bug reports / feature requests that, when addressed, would go a long way to make C1 a much better software, but unfortunately, since quite a while every update and every upgrade embodied some different (mostly unrequested) ideas about how development resources should be spent. Of these, only the "style brushes" (=better access to brush presets + saving brush parameters) where really useful. The "speed edit" approach was not bad, but does not help those who were working with consoles already.
On my MBP 2019; 16"; macOS 10.15.7 the hardware acceleration finally is running well. C1 offers a work around for those having trouble and at least this works fine for me.
Ok, but just imagine they would use metal api instead of the „ancient“ open gl on intel too. Can’t tell the difference in percentage, but at least I guess it could be 30-50% performance increase. There has to be a reason.

I have taken your request on board to consider those lens profiles support in the future release versions of Capture One.
Hopefully, your feedback contributes towards a future version of Capture One.
Let's talk about how dumb it is that:
-- When the location of images changes, your software is not smart enough to comprehend the new location for all images in a catalog; you have to manually relocate dozens or hundreds of images by right-clicking "Locate" over and over and over and over and over.
-- That you even have to waste time moving the mouse to the photo in the catalog to right click every single image over and over instead of binding the context-menu key to the context menu, which is why that key exists on the keyboard!
-- That even though I've bound "Q" to spot removal, every single time I start Capture One the Q key will never work. I have to find the spot-removal tool with the mouse and select it. In fact, when testing whether this bug still exists in the latest version, I started it and "Q" selected the CROP feature!
-- That frequently there is a tendency for no keys at all to work because the menu bar is somehow activated. The solution is to move the mouse to the menu bar (where a menu will drop down without even clicking) and to click to dismiss the condition.
-- That you repeatedly ignore requests to have Photo Mechanic crops read and applied in Capture One.
-- That CONTROL-TAB is supposed to move from module to module and half the time fails to do so while half the time working.
-- That you fail to allow small-step distortion adjustments in the Lens Correction module, and fail to allow them to go negative when needed.
-- That you fail to have the Nikkor 200-500 in the lens profiles.
-- That one can select an "Output Location" in watermarks and still have the output sent somewhere else based on "Process Recipe --> File"
-- That you must waste my time when I click a Process Recipe and miss the check box, because I hit CTRL-D and you insist on putting up a dialog box saying that a process recipe hasn't been selected. Of course one is selected. It's just not checked.
-- That you further waste everybody's time by having no undo ability in places such as after deleting an image, which in that case forces users to disrupt their workflows by switching modules, digging through trash, finding the deleted image, restoring it, and hoping it shows up where it's supposed to. How insulting that you value our time like this.
Yes, indeed. This is not great. You've excelled at making a speedier client than LightRoom by a blazing factor. You have these fixes to make for me to find the client remotely free of frustration.
You guys need to offer the ability to download the last previous release version (so now that 14.3.0 is out, make it possible to download 14.2.x) for people who need to roll back.
