Before getting started, please refer to the user manual to be clear on terminology and camera menus.
Nikon Z9
- Press Menu on the camera body
- Navigate to Network Menu > Connect to computer
- Make sure that the Connection type setting is set to Camera control
- Navigate to Network settings
- Choose Create profile and go through the steps to establish a Wi-Fi connection, either through an access point (“search for wi-fi network”) or through the camera’s wifi (“direct connection to computer”) according to the camera’s manual.
- For the search for wifi option, the camera will display the SSIDs of available networks. Choose one, enter password, the camera will be assigned an IP address from the access point.
- For the direct connection from computer, the camera will create its own network, connect to this network from the Mac or PC that is running Capture One Pro.
- The camera will prompt you to open Nikon’s Wireless Transmitter Utility (WTU), in order to pair. Instead, open Capture One Pro and choose the camera from the dropdown list in the Camera tool. This will complete the pairing process.
N.B. Refrain from opening Wireless Transmitter Utility during this process, as it will block the connection to Capture One.
(the camera will of course be a Nikon Z9 in this instance) - Once pairing is complete, the camera will have created a profile representing the connection between the camera and the specific Mac or PC that it has been paired to.
- You will be returned to the “Connect to computer” menu, and you will see that the camera is re-connecting to the network. Once it has, the message “connecting to computer” will appear. This means that the camera can now be chosen from Capture One.
For IP-based tethering using an Ethernet cable
- Connect the camera to a router or directly to a computer. The latter may be unstable, due to the length of ethernet cables and the type of data being transferred
- Follow the steps 1-5 from instructions above and create a profile for the wired connection
The detailed steps are as follows:
Menu > Network Menu > Wired LAN = ON > Connect to Computer = ON > Network settings > Create profile > Enter a name > Obtain automatically (or manual, if you have the relevant IT knowledge) > IP address configuration complete > OK > "Pairing computer and camera. Start the Wireless Transmitter Utility (Capture One Pro) on the computer and select the camera" - Select the camera from the dropdown menu in the Camera tool
Nikon D6
The process is almost identical, with a small difference in the pairing menu. Please follow the steps in the user manual for this camera.
The important thing to remember is to replace any mention of 'Wireless transfer utility (WTU)' with 'Capture One' - they both achieve the same thing, as Capture One acts as a proxy for WTU.
N.B. D6 only supports wireless tethering when using the WT-6 accessory.
Troubleshooting for Windows users:
In case of the camera not displaying in Capture One
- Check Bonjour service
Bonjour is a prerequisite. Go to services and make sure there is a service called Bonjour service and it’s enabled. - Check Firewall settings
Go to “Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security” > “Inbound Rules” and check that Bonjour service is there and allowed. - Discoverability
Make your computer discoverable to the network. Go to “File explorer”, chose Networks from the left side panel and enable network sharing from the yellow prompt at the top of the window. If you don’t see the yellow prompt, it is already enabled. - Turn off IPv6 and/or restart the network adapter
Go to Network connections, right click on the wifi, chose properties, uncheck the “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)” and restart the wifi adapter.

Hi,
I have a problem, when I connect Z9 on the machine it tells me to connect with wireless transmitter. If I pair Z9 and Captoureone I get this error message.
I had same problem.
I changed Langage setting Japanese to English, but it was same error.
Z9 firmware 2.11
MacBook Pro M1 Max 14'
macOS Monterey 12.6
Capture One 22 Pro 15.4.0.22
Double check the user manual for the Z9 and ensure the camera is setup correctly. If you've done that already, contact support as it could be a bug.
ok got this wireless setup going with Z9 however I have my camera set to 5g wifi but for some reason the camera connection says its 2.4g is there a way to get it to use the 5g connection maybe itll work faster?
wrote this 8 months ago just checking if there’s any answer here?
Hi Jack
I have tried various ways to solve the problem of Z9 not connecting with Wireless, and I will share them with you.
The problem was the Nikon Wireless Transmitter Utility.
In my case, I had paired with Nikon Wireless Transmitter Utility before connecting wirelessly to Capture one, and this seemed to be the cause.
I turned off pairing in the Nikon Wireless Transmitter Utility, and
When creating a new network from the Z9, pairing with Capture one instead of Nikon Wireless Transmitter Utility worked.
I have tried wireless tethering for high efficiency RAW with the new update and it works well too.
So its not bug, I think
"The important thing to remember is to replace any mention of 'Wireless transfer utility (WTU)' with 'Capture One' - they both achieve the same thing, as Capture One acts as a proxy for WTU."
I will update this so that it is clearer that WTU cannot be used or open when trying to connect to Capture One. Sorry for the confusion.
seth miranda I can't help directly with this one as it is camera specific, and I don't currently have access to this camera model. If you have trouble solving this using Nikon's resources (user guide, manual, help center etc.) then let us know if you think it is something Capture One specific that is preventing the 5 Ghz connection. For what it's worth, I've found 2.4 Ghz to be a bit more stable, but that's perhaps due to the range I've been using and the amount of other devices connected to the 5 Ghz band.
OK. I have a D7200. Can I connect wirelessly with it? All I see here is the Z9.
Jeff Nims Not possible, I'm afraid. Check the supported cameras list to see the full list of supported cameras: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/6848816259101-Supported-cameras
The new Nikon Z8 can I connect wireless with it?
Erik Schultz Yes, you can :) the steps should be similar if not identical to the Z9
Hi! Is it possible to only transfer the jpgs to capture one?? Kr Ronald
Hi, I've been over this step by step again and again with the Z8. CaptureOne just doesn't seem to detect anything. I really don't know what to do. Really frustrating. Capture One 22 15.4 Macbook M1 Z8
Ryan Cowan That's because you're using a version that doesn't support that camera. You'll need to use 16.2.
You can download it here: https://www.captureone.com/en/account/download
You will need a Capture One 23 license to run this version.
Ronald Z This all depends on if your camera firmware and if the camera allows it. We don't have a complete list of cameras that support this behavior, but it's a common question and something we're working towards providing.
In the meantime, you can always refer to your camera manual and play around with the options available.
Ah ok. Thanks for letting me know Jack. That’s disappointing.
Ryan Cowan For what it's worth, you'll also need this version to import files from this camera. So if you've recently purchased this camera then you'll need to purchase a new license to use it with Capture One anyway - if that's any consolation.
Happy to advise in any case and hope you find a solution that works for you.
Jack W thanks but with my new Nikon Z8 and the latest Capture One it's not working.
It would be really awesome for in the future: send JPG's to Capture One also with the same filenames. Camranger is doing it really great !
Ronald Zijlstra If Camranger is able to do it, then it probably means we're able to make something happen. Please make a feature request so that we can get your feedback - you can do that here: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/6431248131613-Improve-Capture-One?sort_by=votes
or here for mobile: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/11518481642653-Improve-Capture-One-mobile
Hi Jack W . I made a request. But there are more request like me:

Ronald Zijlstra Understood, but your post is being treated as a formal feature request. Evi (our product manager for mobile) will undoubtedly see this at some point – there are also internal discussions happening around this topic. Thanks for posting and for the dialog that you've contributed to :)
Hi,
I've just spent a couple of hours trying to figure out what's wrong with the Nikon Z9 firmware 4.0 / C1 v23 (16.2) M1 MAC, wireless tether connection. I wanted to give you a heads up in case anyone else encounters similar problems.
After connecting to C1 wirelessly, I was able to take a few photos, ranging from 2 to 10, but then the Z9 would disconnect. The message displayed by C1 was: "Tethering, internal error; Description: Tethering event: Camera is not open."
At first, I thought the issue was related to the new Nikon firmware or the new C1 version, or perhaps some interfering settings. In the end, it turned out that the problem was with my Wi-Fi router, and I had to reset the settings. I don't know why it happened now, as for the last six months everything worked perfectly, and I hadn't changed anything.
Anyway, in hindsight it seems obvious, but I lost about 2 hours dealing with this incredibly frustrating issue. I hope my experience can save someone else some time.
Hi Jack, I'm in the process into looking into a new Nikon body just to support the wireless tethering, but I see there is a lot of questions... Is the Nikon Z9 & Z8 fully compatible with the wireless tethering with capture one? This is very important information to me, as I'll be investing a lot into this. I'll be moving from Lightroom to Capture One, replacing my Camrange with Capture One wireless tethering and I'll need to replace my current Z7II with a Z8 or Z9. It will incredibly helpful if you can assist. Thank you Natelee
The wireless system of Z8 is not working stable.. With Camranger I have no problems with the wifi, so it's more reliable. Only thing is that the Z8 is not working with Camranger yet.. there working on it.
Hi Ronald Zijlstra Thank you for the update really appreciate the efforts. This does help a lot.
Z9 operates stably, with the only concern being the transfer times. On a 5GHz network with the router in the same room, a 56MB RAW file (lossless compression) is transferred in 8 seconds. Meanwhile, a 23MB RAW (high efficiency) file is transferred in 4 seconds. Your transfer times will depend on your router. I had to disable the 2.4GHz signal, because if the camera connected to that one, transfer times would quadruple. Otherwise, everything works very well, with no problems occurring with the live view or anything else. Lately, I encountered an issue with it losing connection, but in the end, it was the router's fault, not C1 or the camera. I wrote about it in a post, but it's still pending.
The main source of truth for camera support is this page: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002718118
If a camera has wired and wireless support, then it will also have it for the mobile app :)
I can only recommend that you take out a free 30-day trial and see if you get along ok. We're here to help if you have any further questions.
https://www.captureone.com/en/account/download-trial
Hi Jack W thank you for your response.
I did try your 30-day trail with the hope that I can connect my Z7II. It connects and the program connects to the camera and then just drops off and the only research I found was to upgrade to the Z9. I want to get rid of the Camranger ideally. I imagined the Z7II would work on Capture One if it has wifi connection.
I'll speak to Nikon MEA and see if I can borrow a Z9 & Z8 and test it out to see if it works.
I just thought with technology it would have been a bit more advance when it comes to wireless tethering.
Thank you for the help Natelee
Jaroslaw Stankiewicz did you also use the wifi function directly between camera & capture one? Without the Router?
i tried the tutorial to connect to the z9 wireless but the y9 shows not up in Capture one to pair it, with the WTU it works perfectly there the camera shows up imidietly. i use the latest FW of the z9 and capture one 23 16.2.2 very disapointing
Also followed the steps as mentioned above, but nevertheless the camera Z9 doesnt want to pass the connection step with WTU app. Opening Capture One doesnt bring me any step further nor the camera is recognized in the latest version of C1. Latest firmware on the Z9 and the win11 is up-to-date. Have no issues with connections using WTU to my laptop. Instant recognition and works smooth. Maybe not the best reference here but even with the latest version of competitor LRC I can get the Z9 working wireless flawless and instant connection.
So how can we get this fixed in C1?
Thank you for the support as I would prefer keep using C1 for tethering. Looking forward for a final solution.
