New Approach To Licensing Is Offensive

The biggest problem here is that we do not receive bug fixes after the next .dot release. That is a showstopper, for me, especially because their software is full of regression (read: new) bugs in old functionality. But I will not subscribe. They need to get their maintenance policy for perpetual licensees right, which they even indicated here in the forum but apparently to no avail.

Preston Turner - When did you upgrade?  What version did you buy?  16.3.0 came out in October so if you bought any 16.3.x version, then you are entitled to 16.3.4 and your profile will allow you to download it.  People are sometimes confused about what is says there because it will say something like "Max eligible version: 16.3" which actually includes all 16.3.x versions including 16.3.4.

John you would think so - I purchased on November 10th. But my purchase page says 16.3.3 is the latest version I am eligible to download. All this nonsense is so frustrating!

Preston Turner - That makes no sense.  If you're allowed to have 16.3.3, then you're also allowed to have 16.3.4.  I'd suggest you follow the whole download link and see what it downloads.  Other users in this forum (in the last few days) have been confused about the wording on screen where is says 16.3 and they think that means they can't have 16.3.4, but if they just follow the download link, they get 16.3.4.  If you still can't get 16.3.4, then either post screenshots of what you're seeing or open a support request because if you have a licensed copy of 16.3.3 already, you are entitled to 16.3.4 even if there's a bug in the download.

I am a long time C1 user. The new permanent license model, which changed the way updates are available is just silly. I JUST upgraded a few months ago, and now my account page tells me I'm not eligible to down load a simple .dot upgrade? That's ridiculous. I just bought, and am being told I cannot update to 16.3.4?

It feels like C1 is going out of its way to alienate customers. Frustrating and sad.

Instead of outright opposing the model, suggest alternative approaches that might address your concerns. Perhaps a discounted update for existing users or a grace period for recent upgrades could be a possible compromise.

If you are going to participate here, please go to your profile and give yourself an original name so we can properly reply to you and see who we're talking to.  "FirstName LastName" has dozens of duplicates.

We've made all sorts of proposals before. Reasonable upgrade pricing.  All upgrades included for 6 months after purchasing, regardless of what the version number is.  Go back to the original model for perpetual licenses.  Pick your option.  All are better than we have now.

Plus. there's no evidence that anyone from corporate is actually listening here or even cares what customers think about this.   Their actions from the last two years speak for what they care about.  Drop the reasonably-priced, camera-specific versions.  Raise the price across the board.  Drop reasonable upgrading pricing for perpetual license holders.  Drop reasonable upgrade policy for perpetual license holders - all with very lousy customer communication.  Then, recently drop the Express version, but not just drop support for new versions - but proactively reach out and turn off existing installations.  I've never seen a company with so many customer-hostile actions in such a short time.

All signs are that the company is desperate for revenue and more interested in squeezing every ounce of revenue out of customers than caring at all how customers are treated or what they think.

Hi guys , i was evaluating buying C1. But the licensing when you buy a permanent license was not crystal clear. So you confirm me what i was afraid of.

if you buy 16.0 you don't have access to minor release 16.1, 16.2, 16.3. If you want an interesting update because for example they solve an OpenCL / CUDA issues with your specific GPU , you are good to buy the software again if you don't want to go for subscription.

I agree with other this policies is really bad. Because who in his right mind would buy a permanent license of a software that use GPU acceleration without the ability to update the minor versions.

The way i see it is a way to push you to subscription only. I think you should write this very clearly on your webpage. if you buy 16.0 you will not be allowed to have 17.0 nor 16.1 nor 16.2 nor 16.3. you are just allowed to update to 16.0.1/16.0.2.

It is important to know excatly what you buy even when it's a bad deal.
