Please provide a bit more information. What version of Capture One are you using? What version of MacOS or of Windows? Where is the catalog located (an internal or external drive)? Where are the images located (internal or external drive)?

    Ver: 16.4.5.2312 for Windows.
The catalog is on the internal fast SSD. The folder with photos is on the internal fast HDD.

    Hi Alex,

What does "slow" actually mean in terms of seconds?

C1 scans the files every time to see if the files are still there, it otherwise marks it as offline.

    HDDs are never fast.

And C1 is not known to have a fast catalog either.

    Cheers,
    BeO

    Hi BeO

I have neither the time nor the desire to measure in seconds. Everything is known in comparison. Lightroom works with files noticeably faster.

There is no need to scan all the images each time to set the offline flag. This is redundant and irrational. You only need to scan the file that the user is working with at the moment. The user may not even access the other files. So why waste resources scanning them.

You can ignore this when there are 100 images in the folder, but when there are 10 thousand or more, even an SSD will not save you.

If competitors work faster, then the problem can be solved if there is a desire. I would like to hope that C1 will find the desire to do optimization.

I don't know why it is, but I have noticed over some time that complaints about Capture One re-generating previews constantly seem to crop up mostly for Windows users. Maybe there is some technical reason for this that I don't understand, but for what it's worth it seems to be a particularly Windows issue.

Instead of solving problems, you can try to find an excuse in the operating system.
But if other programs in the same operating system have no problems, then it is worth thinking about.

But if C1 positions itself as software for MacOS, then you will have to change the software.

I like C1 and I have been patiently waiting for a long time hoping that the developers will finally solve the problem of slow work with the directory and files. But alas.

By writing in this forum you are not addressing Capture One tech staff, and I am not Capture One tech staff. I was simply making an observation that in my experience, the times I've seen posts about this it's a problem that mostly seems to affect Windows systems, in case that helps narrow down the issue.

By the way, I have noticed that there is an FAQ about this here

    https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002800517-Why-do-my-previews-constantly-regenerate

but reading it, I am not sure whether it would help your situation. Still, it's a short article and it may be worth you reading it in case there is something there that would help.

First, there is no way around and the C1 catalog definitely needs improvement. But I'm on Windows with a some 38K photos catalog and I don't see constant folder rescans. When I start C1 and the UI has build up, it needs about 4 sec. until all images are available - without any folder scan.
Well, out of my experience over years I can't confirm a special behaviour in this regard under Windows. It more looks to me like any constellation caused by your system configuration.

    Edit:
Just to add that question: Is there any other software which accesses the files and let C1 think there have been changes to them, causing a rescan?

Unfortunately this is how Windows version of Capture One behaves. It was one of main reasons I moved to Mac. My catalog at the time (around 20000 images on internal NVME SSD) was much faster and responsive using C1 run through macOS virtual machine on my PC workstation. It was around 2019 so I guess nothing has changed in how C1 handles catalogs on Windows. It appears that software has to read each file in selected collection before displaying anything. It is the same behaviour as in sessions but for catalogs it is present only on Windows PC.

There is so much written here, which took same time, but a user who does not even have "the time nor the desire to measure in seconds" for his 2.5k image catalog cannot be helped, by nobody. Users who are not even willing to help explaining/detaling their issue are just a waste of time. He just wanted to rant, nothing else. Bye.
