How to not import duplicates

If a "duplicate image" is defined as "any second image file having the same file name as a first file regardless of file content", a simple measure may be to avoid sourcing repeated file names to the import mechanism. Use one camera, one menory card and make sure to clear/empty the card after each import.

A second image file that renders the same pixels as a first image file may be considered a duplicate image even if file names differ or if just their metadata differ. Duplicate image is not a simple concept.

If you state your "duplicate image" definition, someone more knowledgable may be able to provide sound advice.

Simply, is there a way to not import duplicates?

    Catalogue or Session?

If catalogue, Managed files or Referenced?

    1) I would love to know how to prevent C1 from importing an image that is already in a Catalog. Is this possible?

    2) Also, is there a way to search a catalog for duplicate images? I define a "duplicate" as a catalog preview image referencing the original image (in a referenced catalog) that shares the same name, size and possibly metadata. I bet I have thousands of unedited variants in my referenced catalog. Is there a way to simply locate and delete them?

I think that many people would like this feature, which apparently works in LR.

Another worthwhile "feature." Isn't there a process whereby we can submit these kinds of concerns for consideration for inclusion by the company?

When you do be sure to define exactly what you mean by duplicate and how you might wish for the software to be able to respond should you ever wish to re-import something you had previously imported.

Meanwhile, if like me you tend to keep shooting to the same card(s) until they are full before clearing them out for re-use, have you considered filtering on import?

Or, assuming you are likely to be able to recognise the images you have newly shot, invert the sort order and scroll down until you see the first one you need. Select it and everything above it and "Import Selected".

    HTH.

Don't know if this will help or not, but I always import images from all cameras using the same naming system - Image Date/Time, etc. I am using a catalog with referenced images. When a duplicate is imported, it gives it the Image Date/Time name with (1) at the end, just like in the Finder. So far, deleting images with that suffix has kept duplicates out as far as I can tell.

Please be cautious, as this still includes files with ###1 in the file name. It doesn't isolate files with the (1) at the end. It'd be great to be able to alter how C1 labels duplicates using other characters instead.
