Cap1 Pro7: Colour Temperature Range Settings in User Styles
Hello
Cap1 is a challenging beast! On the one hand it is full of tools that enable the user to tweak almost anything. On the other hand it is this very adaptability that encourages us (well, me anyway) to push the boundaries to extremes because our eyes adapt so quickly to what is on the screen - so it can be hard to see a difference. Often the 'best' outcome lies somewhere in the middle of the range of a slider tool.
A prime example of this is judging white balance/colour temperature. It is simply not as straightforward as using a grey card because there is a range of temperatures in an outdoor scene - from bluish shadows to reddish highlights. Some software allows you to adjust the colour temperature of different colour zones (e.g.Tiffin DFX) but I find this overly fussy.
Instead I have created a special sub-folder in the Cap1 'User Styles' folder that I call Temperature and filled the sub-folder with separate user style settings for a range of temperatures. Then, my workflow for raw conversion includes a quick scan of these settings moving from the red end to the blue end and homing in on a middle one that is 'just right'. Cap1 makes this scan easy because you only need to hover the mouse pointer to get an instant feedback. Then I fine-tune with the Tint slider.
The same principle can be applied to other tool sliders that are natural pairs, such as sharpening and noise. Again looking for a mid-range 'best' outcome.
For me, this kind of use of the User Style facility is probably the best feature of Cap1 because it is very user-friendly for those of us who may be visually challenged with fine-tuning what we see on the display (i.e. yours truly!).
If this is of interest I can send PO a copy of my Temperature folder but at the moment I don't know how to do this in a Forum setting.
