Should I upgrade? Should it be free, purchased less

Should you upgrade, I don't know. From what I've seen I haven't found anything I couldn't live without in v20.
Should it be free? No. I bought a camera once and a new version came out 6 months later, such is life. Perhaps upgrading could be cheaper or Capture One could be on a two year new release model instead of every year since the updates aren't always substantial.

When you buy Capture One you get free updates for the version you’ve bought. Some other programs, you get free updates and upgrades for a year. The good thing of C1 is you get to buy an upgrade to the next version for less, whereas with programs where you buy updates/upgrades (and support) for a year you regularly have to pay full price for another year. Something to be said for both.

Anyway, PhaseOne had had a grace period since the end of October - roughly a month.

Wether you need to upgrade or not, that’s entirely up to you. C1 20 has a better user experience overall and improvements in noise reduction and the basic color editor. Whether that’s enough for you, only you can answer,

NO !!!! do not upgrade at the moment - the version 13 (or 20 as they call it) is super buggy. i can barely use it at the moment. wait for a bug release at least then you can try - and also do not upgrade any of your critical databases - just test it with some photos you can lose.

I agree. I have v11 Pro and v20 DB (or for Phase One as is now named) and IMHO v11 is super stable compared to v20. I think v11 was a matured piece of software with relatively minor bugs (i.e. Caption field disappearing from Print) and v20 is just the improvement to v12 where they went completely rewriting the code. The bugs are listed elsewhere on this forum and they mostly appear also with me. I would wait for .1 or .2 release for super critical work.

    What I like with v20:
    - scrollable tools for notebook workspaces
    - changing viewer background with keyboard shortcuts Shift + 1 - 6
    - process button at the bottom of the process recipes tool
    - easily accessible masking cursor tools
    - the new direct color editor
