I have used Photoshop Elements for years, and am new to C1P7. Have only tried the masking and layers feature in C1P7 a couple of times. It seems pretty crude compared to the Editor in Elements. Suspect I will still use the Elements Editor for work requiring accurate selections.

I guess it depends on what you are masking and how you want the mask to be.

If you are talking about auto-mask, I think the auto-mask feature in C1 can be outpaced by Lr. I don't know about auto-mask in PS Elements. I think brush hardness is more easily set in C1 than in PSE.

    However, I don't use auto-mask and don't feel I am missing much...

Reason is I don't really try to follow the exact outline of things...

If I am trying to darken the sky, I let the mask fade away gently into the hillside or whatever. Use the graduated mask or my own soft brush. Sometimes I will mask tightly to a feature but I do that at great magnification and still have some very little 'softness' at the transition from sky to hillside (continuing to use hill and horizon as example). I don't try to paint with a hard brush the transition pixel to pixel... Maybe Lr auto-mask is good enough to not need this type of work, but I don't know. [I think PSE auto-select has a feathering option and it is about leaving some amount of softness]

If I am working with smooth tones like sky, I use either the graduated mask or a ridiculously large and soft brush. One pass is best. Multiple passes 'painting in' smooth tones like blue sky or white background don't turn out well...

Making some adjustments by color selection is a good thing. [basically creating a mask by color than by painting] I think adjusting brightness by using Color Tool works better than masking. Where it is applicable, this is a great option. The Color Tool can be used with a rough mask to restrict the effect to only some parts of the image; often there is no need for precise masking. If Lr or PSE allow this, I don't know.

Most recently, I have used C1 for all things other than some little content removal or blending two output images for mixed light. I might output the same image twice with each output treated for appropriate color. I blend these in PSE and it has worked well. If C1 allowed 'white balance type' adjustments on a layer, I would use PSE even less.

Thank you both for reply. Tan68 do you speak about Phase One Pro or other program. I don't find automask from Phase One. I use also Photoshop CC. I would like more if I could skip Photohop in future because I use so little part of it. To give you an idea about my pics, I put a link here:

C1 does auto masking. When you are ready to draw a mask, right click on the image to bring up the brush settings pallet. There is a checkbox for 'pen pressure' if you use a tablet (pen tablet not mobile computing device) and a checkbox for 'auto mask'.

Adjusting brightness by color tool is a thing to look into.
It is handy and masking isn't as critical.
I might use a rough mask, pick a color to confine adjustment, then increase brightness. Brightness, saturation, hue are things that can be done with a color tool selection. Then I might use a typical mask drawn more carefully if I want to adjust clarity or something. For example.

For the pictures you have, I would work on them in C1 only.
I think I would get satisfactory results unless I wanted to try a cloning thing.
But I don't do that often.

There is auto maskin, ofcourse I am really newbee here. I don't see any effect from it.

I have tried color tool little, I feel it is not so powerfull as masking tool.

I am waiting for, what will be better in next uppdate Phase One, if I could wish it was easier use of masking tool. I like PO pro more than Photoshop CC, even Photoshop has much easier masking.

Thank You Tan68 for your friendly reply, jouni
