Key words on video files
ImplementedHi,
I would like to add and edit key words on video files. At the moment thats not possible.
I think with side cars it should be doable easily.
Best,
David

i can't even put colors like pick or reject on videofiles. I vote for this feature

One vote more for both, keywords and color/star rating!

The entire set of Edit instructions includes keywords, ratings and colour tags.
There are no edit instructions for videos as C1 does not edit videos.
So an entirely different mechanism would be required.
Absent any new developments that allows C1 to edit video (seems unlikely?) what would be the benefit and use case for finding a way to make C1 handle a "limited?" set of metadata compared, say, to using another application designed for the purpose?
If you have something it could make a stronger case.

@SFA: I've just started using C1 Pro 20 two weeks ago, switching from Lightroom. Since I mainly use my two EOS SLR's for video capturing, I import them into C1 together with all the pictures. I use Final Cut Pro X for video processing, therefore, I don't really rely on video editing features in C1.
One advantage of key-wording, color and star tagging video clips would be having one place where I can store and search for original pictures and videos clips. I'm not sure wether this makes sense for the long term, since a copy of the video clips used for a movie are usually stored within the Media Library in FCPX. Alternatively, the clips could also be referenced as external files, but I haven't used that so far.
FCPX knows metadata and keywords, so it could be helpful if these data would be compatible.
But at least I'd know where to search for any original video clip...

Indeed Roger, but the thing is that in C1 the information you want to use is currently stored in the edit instructions file and there is no obvious use for that, as things stand, for a video.
So the options seem to be to significantly modify the various parts of the application that interface between media file and the edit file(s) in order to allow colour tags, ratings and keywords for videos OR to create a specific video function to allow such values to be set - probably in a different type of file - and be read by C1 for browsing purposes.
Or, maybe, get into the Video editing business ... but would you use a RAW converter as the basis for that?
If you use a tool that creates an XMP file would that work and would it be read by C1 if Sync is turned on?
I would check but I so rarely use video that I don't think I have any easy way of doing the checking.

I was not aware that C1 stores metadata and editing instructions in one file, so I agree with your first statement.
If metadata was stored in separate place, of file, things would look a bit different; then it would be no big effort to extend such a metadata file and the appropriate functions to store and edit video specific information. And all the editing instructions would be kept in a separate place, or file.
For me, as I'm far away from using C1 and FCPX as a professional, I can do it with the current functionality. It would have been an interesting approach, but no real need.
I've not investigated nor tested any XMP features in FCPX. What I know is that FCPX supports EXIF and IPTC data, and FCPX specific metadata such as keywords to tag video clips and movies, but I found no information wether these can be exported.
As said before, I can live with the current situation, but if there were some improvements on this, I would appreciate it.

Some thoughts:
1) Anything that's importable into a catalog should be treated equally in terms of metadata, otherwise the point importing the media to begin with is moot, as it prevents finding, sorting, etc. If it can't have metadata assigned, do not allow the import. Or if you allow the import, allow full metadata access. There is no middle ground.
2) This is a feature request forum, justifications for why the software doesn't currently support a feature or functionality are irrelevant and counterproductive.
3) To suggest that how data is stored somehow drives functionality makes no sense.

Hi there,
Thank you for feedback on Capture One - this is always welcomed and encouraged among our users and we appreciate the time you've taken to contribute towards the development of the software.
I have forwarded your comments and suggestions to our Product Management team as something to consider in a future release.
Whilst we cannot comment on future releases, we take all suggestions on board and hopefully your feedback contributes towards a future version of Capture One.

Being able to do all my color coding, star rating and keywording in Capture One would be great, so yes, absolutely need to be able to do it to video files. I can see them in the browser, so you should be able to do simple things like that to them.

Considering that C1 already reads tags and keyword from XMP files I don’t think this would be a big change. I also remember in one of the older versions I discovered by accident that you could tag and keyword videos if you followed a certain sequence so I am pretty sure the code is there.

I do mostly images, but I also make Living Photography (which are made from videos and which are very short video clips in the end) with Cinemagraph Pro and it makes a lot of sense for me to at least manage rate and select videos and photos in one place. Therefore I would extremely like to be able to put at least keywords to video files in Capture One. To be able to rotate videos at least in 90 degree steps for previewing them would be very nice also, not editing of course.
Please make another customer happy :-)0 -
Another vote for support for keywording of video files! I am still on Aperture but i have purchased a Capture One license. I have quite a few videos in Aperture, and they are all keyworded. I don't want to lose this when I eventually migrate my library to Capture One. I don't care about editing the videos. I just want to be able to easily find what I'm looking for, and I need the keywords for that.

+1 for keywords, rating and color tag.
EDIT: And IPTC fields
I rarely use video so it does not make sense for me to use a different catalog for them, just want to store and find them like any other (image) file.

I too would like the ability to tag and rate video files. I import them into Capture One along with all my photos. I then rate the photo files I want to keep, then I delete all unrated files. Currently, since I cannot rate the video files this disrupts my workflow. I want to keep all original photos and video from a single shoot or project in one catalog and would like to use Capture One to do that. Please consider adding this feature to improve Capture One's functionality.

Lot of people sees Capture One as a media management application. They want that CO1 manage picture between computer, manage the metadata, ...
But, in fact, Capture One is for tethering, RAW development and photo editing. Of course, you can hope that Capture One shall develop it. But, IMO, it's faster if you try specific application.
Well that's one way of looking at it. But since they offered a catalog in addition to sessions this is not true anymore, in my view. Some basic asset management for all assets that come from the supported cameras should be possible, I mean they SHOW video files in the collections which tells me they don't ignore them like other file types, so if it is in the catalog rating and tagging and keywording should be added to have any value.
If the catalog is so subpar to any other "specifc" catalog application, then maybe they should think about dropping this concept sell C1 with sessions only for 70% of the current rate. Or, even better, offer a true integration to existing DAM solutions with an API or at least a mode where all metadata and edits are in one sidecar file in the same directory as the original. But now, this is neither fish nor meat.
As long as they sell C1 as a catalog lot of people should keep wanting better catalog features...
Cheers,

I switched over to Capture One a few months ago from Aperture, and one thing that significantly delayed my cutover was Capture One's inability to tag video files. I am mainly interested in photos, but I do want to keep a small number of video files in my library. I understand that the reason Capture One won't tag video files is that it has only been programmed to handle metadata on photos and not videos. However, I think it would certainly be possible for Capture One to maintain metadata for non-photo files in its own database without altering the video files themselves. There would be some risk, as the video files would not contain the metadata. But the benefits, in my opinion, would far outweigh the risks.
I am not exactly holding my breath, but I am still hoping for tagging of video assets. For now, I just create folders corresponding to tags for my video files. Essentially it means just one tag per video file, but it's good enough for now.

Yes indeed, C1 never alters original files but stores the metadata in the catalog. Or in xmp files in addition.

Hi EtMRS,
Adding metadata and filter for the files, then allow for copy & paste of metadata and adjustments, within the set of images filtered, is what I need most, thus the integration of the "smart filters only" catalog with editing features is something I don't want to give up. If that can be achieved with an external catalog/DAM (or whatever it's called) in combination with C1 and is as easy as in C1 then yes, an integration would be very welcome.

Not being able to import properly dates, color tag and rate video in 2022 makes C1 unprofessional as a DAM.
I clearly have difficulties to believe this is rocket science programming.

I haven't used C1 in a while but video tagging actually worked back then if you edited the XMP file manually. There was also a version where on one screen you could tag and keyword videos through the C1 interface (they took that away later).
Unless I am totally mistaken I believe they have all the code in place already.

After fiddling with the problem, I arrived to that conclusion on Capture One 21, regarding videos :
- color tag, IPTC tags and rating are apple-scriptable and can be edited and stored in the Catalog. See example on scripting forum. So there is a hack to modify them from the user side.
- Exif Tags, including date, GPS coordinates and keywords are not. Some third parties have tried to emulate the import feature with moderate success (buggy), meaning, you will be able to import date, keywords, orientation from another app, with a lot of pain
