I don't think it is possible to restrict the filter to a folder, at least I did not find a way. I was thinking maybe with projects, but this seems to be a catalog concept only.

    Hi,

I too was hoping to create a smart album for a specific folder and I am not seeing how to do it.  Also, I would like the smart album to search specific folder and it sub-folders.... but I am not sure if that can be done too?  I miss LR sub-folders searches....

Could you maybe select all files in a particular folder (ctrl-A on a PC) and then add a keyword identifying the folder contents? For example, if you have folder that contains images from a concert, say, select all those files, go to the Keywords tool, then add a keyword identifying the concert. This will add the keyword to all selected images. Then you can create a smart folder that uses the keyword you created to narrow your search to just that folder. I've used this as a workaround quite a bit.

If you have a filter defined it will (or should) filter on the currently selected images.

So "All images" means you are filtering the entire session.

If you have selected a folder it should filter in that folder

A Smart Album, by it's nature, is intended to look across all images known to the session unless you constrain it.

I think the problem of Trashed images is about identifying them as trashed (and there are times when Automatically excluding them could be unhelpful! Rarely  ... but sometimes ...)

Mostly I think most people use a star rating or colour tag (probably applied prior to trashing) and those can easily be filtered as part of a Smart Album. However there are other IPTC fields, including keywords as already mentioned, that could be used.
