    Hi,
A few notes on how Windows works and how Capture One works.

    Capture One
You have used CO Express since end September 18. Great. Express created one catalog, named Capture One Catalog. No doubts there because that is the only thing CO Express can do. It created it in the default Pictures location.
Next, you went Pro begin January 19. Great again. Pro continued to work with your previously created Capture One Catalog in the same location. Unless you told Pro to do otherwise. I don’t think so because that would mean you started with a new catalog without images. You would have noticed that.

    Windows
The Library > Pictures item is a virtual location. You can include any physical location into it. Library > Pictures is the default location so that looks normal. It seems that you have a D: drive with a Pictures folder, that is assigned to Library container. In other words, there is just one Capture One Catalog, but you find it in the virtual and physical location, resulting in confusion.

    Capture One
You make catalog backups. You are the greatest. Everybody should do that. You make these to the Photos 2018 folder somewhere on your computer. These backups are small. These are no full catalogs, just the database and some adjustments files. That is fine.

    Big
Your catalog is now 30GB. I do not know how much images you have imported, but perhaps you have imported the originals into the catalog, instead of leaving them where they were on your disks and import only a link. That is something to look into.

Thank you enormously for your response which helps but creates more questions... sorry!
Currently I never ever direct anything to go into Library / Pictures so I selected the backups to go to my G: Photos 2018 location when I consciously backed up. Thus I must assume the initial Express version put itself into Library / Pictures.

I always left images at their current location - ie thinking that the catalogue/database would just 'point to' where they are located, without actually importing them INTO the catalogue (which I really don't want).

To stop this monster from growing ever bigger in various places, please tell me how to amalgamate everything into ONE spot and will it allow me to eliminate / delete older backups that are just hanging around cluttering up my computer?

I would like to begin a brand new folder to continue on with from now. I can treat the previous work as practise runs but would love one correctly set up working catalogue that I can trust to be correct and build up on from now ongoing.
How do I achieve that? (without losing previous edits - I will still be able to access those from previous backups, right?)

    This is my import dialogue
Should I set a 'backup to' location?

As far as I know, I'm leaving the image RAWs in their original folder in my internal G: drive without importing
    them into the C1 catalogue

The Library concept is clearly confusing you. I personally do not know any Windows user who uses it or understands it. My advice, neglect it or remove it from your Windows Explorer (there are ways to do that, no instructions available). Forget it. It is just virtual. It does not really exist.

Regarding your backups, just go to the G: Photos2018 location, and delete the older backups.

I think you need somebody onsite or connect remotely to help you setup it properly that you feel confident. I do this kind of support (paid) but do not intend to use this free service for acquisition. So you must initiate that.

What is the reason that some of the backups 'contain' so much more than other backups?
I am wary to delete chunks and then be stuck high and dry with missing information.
    And thanks again

Hmm, it is the first time I see Cache and Originals folders in a backup. I learn something new everyday. Maybe a trick from Windows version of Capture One (I usually work on macOS). I should look into this. I can not see the size from your screenshot, despite that it is very informative, but if the Cache folder contains the proxy files, that is what makes the backup large.

Unless you like to go back to a certain date, there is no use to keep that backup. But ultimately it is your decision.

How could I find out whether there are proxy files in the folder?
Do I need to keep those? It seems to want to rebuild them each time I open the catalogue.
(I know this because there are 3 that are damaged files and I get a notification each time that it was unable to build proxy files for those)

    Open the folder.

Proxies are automatically build when missing. When the catalog rebuilds your proxies each time you open it, there is something wrong. I suggest you contact the support department on this.

I thank you for your ongoing assistance!
