Comparative Speed-Test
Notebook: SONY Vaio VGN-Z 11VN/B (2.500.-€ in 2008)
OS: Win 7 Pro 64bit
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9300GS M + Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Hybrid System with 2 Graphic Cards with latest drivers
CPU: Intel Core Duo P9500 2.53GHz
HD#1: Crucial SSD 256GB for OS
HD#2: Seagate Momentus XT 320GB 7.200rpm for Images
RAM: 8GB
On the Notebook the loss of speed is dramatic in C1 v7.1. I just made a simple Test with a stopwatch and got the following results:
Test PC is my Laptop: Sony Vaio VGN-Z11VN
RAW-files from my Canon EOS 1Ds MIII
Tests:
1) Importing Images and calculate Previews (36 images)
2) Developing 36 images WITHOUT adjustments or crops into Jpeg sRGB 8Bit + Tiff 16Bit Adobe RGB
Results:
C1 vers. 3.7.10 (32bit):
Test 1 - Importing Images and calculate Previews (36 images): Time: 1:23 Min
Test 2 - Developing 36 images WITHOUT adjustments or crops: Time: 12:56 Min
CPU-Usage from 52-100% - RAM from 43-45% (lowest an highest during Test)
=======================================================================
C1 vers. 6.4.4 (64bit):
Test 1 - Importing Images and calculate Previews (36 images): Time: 1:05 Min
Test 2 - Developing 36 images WITHOUT adjustments or crops: Time: 15:28 Min
CPU-Usage from 64-100% - RAM from 50-100% (lowest an highest during Test)
=======================================================================
C1 vers. 7.0. (64bit):
Test 1 - Importing Images and calculate Previews (36 images): Time: 1:48 Min
Test 2 - Developing 36 images WITHOUT adjustments or crops: Time: 28:49 Min
CPU-Usage from 94-100% - RAM from 74-84% (lowest an highest during Test)
=======================================================================
C1 vers. 7.1. (64bit): [color=#FF8000:2mxo4i0z]OpenCL completely disabled UPDATE
Test 1 - Importing Images and calculate Previews (36 images): Time: 1:25 Min
Test 2 - Developing 36 images WITHOUT adjustments or crops: Time: 27:09 Min[/color:2mxo4i0z]
CPU-Usage from 89-100% - RAM from 49-61% (lowest an highest during Test)
=======================================================================
UPDATE:
good old 3.7.10 (32bit) is more than 2x faster than brand new 7.1 (64bit),
12:56 to 27:09 Min.... on the same machine under the same conditions!
The handling without OpenCL is in my case a bit faster,nothing
dramatic but finally also a disaster compared to 3.7.10 and 6.4.4
It can´t be the solution that the newest software only works on the newest computer
with the newest hardware. My desktop has a newer graphic card but shows the same
symptoms than my laptop...

Fair test, but compare the quality of C1-7, and you have some of the explanation.
Your GPU does not deliver enough compute cores to be used at all.
Best advice, buy more RAM and a new £120 GPU from AMD.

As a user of Media Pro as well, this starts to explain why the update to Media Pro is slow in coming. Since the new MP will have to use the CO7 engine if we expect to see our modifications, speed of rendering will be a huge issue; as will the use of Open CL. 0 -
Just done a quick test.
graphic card GTX460 latest driver installed.
Q9450 quad 2 core 2.66
6gb ram, was 8 but had 1 stick go bad on me and not got round to replacing it yet.
Win7 64.
Same files set up 36 jpg + 16bit tiffs.
C7.1 = 6min give or take a few seconds. C6 a little bit less, looked at watch just before 6min and had already finished.
C7.1 36 FB sized jpg images = 35seconds. same with C6 = 50 seconds.0 -

Regarding OpenCL:
On my old machine at home, which was a Core 2 Quad processor and GTX 560ti gfx adapter (modern gfx, a bit old cpu) I have been able to to have 10 times difference in processing speed from CPU to GPU (with lots of adjustments to the pictures). On a modern performance computer (like a i7 3930 hex core, with a gtx 680), you would see 2-4x the speed from CPU to GPU. It really depends on the ratio between the 2 components (and then disk-speed and so on).
It also possible that it is the other way, if your gfx is old, and your CPU is new. Again, it depends.0 -
@ Lionel &Christian
Lionel I´m talking about my laptop, usually you can´t change the GPU in laptops they are fixed on the motherboard.
8GB RAM is the max for this laptop and with the 256 GB SSD + 320GB Seagate Momentus XT 7.200rpm it works perfect and very fast for an 4 year old and 2.500€ expensive machine. Have photoshop CS6 running on that laptop and it is really quick - and, photoshop uses OpenCL as well - CS6 is the fastest photoshop version I ever had on that laptop - and this shows me that is is not (only) my laptop who is wrong.
There is a mistake Lionel - that simple test was not to find out which software is the best. It simply compares the 2 basic functions of a RAW-converter,(1)Import & (2) Export of images on the same computer under the same conditions.
One word to vers. 3.7.10 - it wasn´t that bad, especially concerning the handling/usability - just compare 1 thing and you understand what I mean - have a look on the IPTC-tool - on 3.7.10 you can use it - in 7.x it is simply unusable - can tell you more if somebody is interested in.
Why is adobe able to realize with CS6 (compared to CS5) such an increase of speed (also using OpenCL) on my "old" laptop with "only" 8GB RAM and a poor GPU? Believe me, CS6 runs fast on my laptop, I work as a press-photographer I don´t like waste my time with a slow machine ... 😉
Would be interesting to see the time difference when YOU compare vers 3.7.x with vers. 7.x on your pc.
However, yes you are right - with a new top level laptop, the newest GPU, 128GB RAM, 2TB SSD Raid it will be faster.
But don´t forget "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link" - the weakest link are the customers, not everybody using C1 7.x has that dream machine you have at the office - and again the question, what is adobe doing different that CS6 runs faster than CS5 and CS4 before - on my, so old, laptop.
What laptop must I buy now to be sure that upcoming vers. 8, 9 and 10 of C1 runs at its best? 😉0
