Olympus E-M1X
I’ve just bought a new Olympus E-M1X and was slightly surprised to find that its RAW files are not recognised. I raised it as a tech support issue and was told it had been referred to r&d. When I asked for a time scale for implementation I was told that it was not possible to comment on future releases.
I appreciate that r&d is a sensitive matter but as a long term user of Capture One I am reluctant to switch to a different editing solution if a RAW codec is in the pipeline. However, having been without an editor for 3 weeks now, I need to know if the camera will be supported and if possible a rough estimate of when.

Well, you are making a statement to a group of fellow users.
You should not be surprised to find that the files from a new camera are not immediately recognised upon release. To have such a result, even for the more commonly purchased "big" players, is unusual for any software provider other than whatever the manufacturer provides with the camera.
For most companies a new camera means getting hold of one and some well controlled sample files, running some tests, doing some analysis, evaluating their results and refining them (probably) and then making the related bespoke profile settings available via some sort of release exercise that will typically also need to be coordinated with other developments.
Some RAW convertors rely in third party suppliers for their profiles rather than doing anything in house as Phase do. Such vendors have to await availability of the profile data files from their supplier before they can begin support work. I have known times before I started to use C1 where the external vendor might be very prompt or, for some reason, might take months to provide their product with the appropriate updates. Early adopters usually become resigned to using manufacturer supplied software for a short time no matter which RAW converter they are using.
Sony and, more recently, Fuji have clearly taken some steps to address their user's about access to more usable software than they choose to supply with the camera. Maybe Olympus could be persuaded to take similar steps?

Thanks for your reply, but I must admit that I am surprised that the camera isn't already supported. It has been around for some months now although only recently released to the public. However that wasn't really the point I was making. I was really hoping that the forum might me moderated by someone from Capture One who cared enough about customer care to give a better response than a shrug of the shoulders.
Oh and I realise that software doesn't just appear out of thin air - it's how I earn my living.0 -

The point is that this is a user-to-user forum. Some Phase One staff do participate from time to time, but we fellow users aren't able to get cameras supported. What you can do is request support for a camera using the support case system. Phase One always say that the number of users requesting support for a particular camera or lens is one of the factors that helps them gauge demand for it.

I have been a Capture One user since version 7.
I’ve never seen Phase One not support a a significant new still camera. I don't think there is any M43 camera which is not supported, back to the G1 (which I have many images from).
I observe that the bigger the sensor, and the more users, the higher the camera is prioritized.
The longest delay for support that I’ve seen is for the GM1, that was nearly 6 months. That was few years ago, things have improved. I think they are still struggling to get full Nikon Z support and this is likely a big focus.0 -

So initially when a new camera comes about Phase One will do absolutely nothing, waiting for a sufficient number of users to "apply" for support. That doesn't make sense, a period of x months of inactivity, and no guideline for users when to expect support. IMO Phase One is in effect telling customers "go suck your thumb" 🙄 . Not very becoming.

No that's not it. If you take as an example a new camera such as the Nikon Z7, there is little doubt that Phase One would support it, as it is a fair bet that a good number of Capture One users would want support for a new high profile high-end camera like that. On the other hand, I suspect Phase One have no ready way of knowing how many of their users have or want to get the Olympus E-M1X, and if users let them know that they are interested in Capture One support for it, that is one (just one) of the factors they can take into account in prioritising development resources.

I think it is the question of prioritising the resources that is the most important factor although product device availability (body or lens, etc.) may be also be factors. Pre-production units (if the manufacturer is willing to make them available) may not be entirely representative of the final product - thus for some things using them may not be a good use of resources. Production units (as loans) may not be easy to obtain, especially if initial demand is high.
Then there are question about, inter alia, file types, sensor specs and what data interpretation needs to be applied, consistency (probably useful to check multiple bodies ...) whether or not tethering can be supported and would be expected by users as part of the first release, how to approach any special features - can they be supported? - are there any significant (to support) software updates expected from the manufacturer and after all of that (and maybe a few other factors) how does the development and testing schedule fit in with product release schedules ...
So there are many factors to consider.
As an Olympus user it might be worth seeking to persuade Olympus to consider having a discussion with Phase about about a Capture One for Olympus version?

Much easier to just use software that offers support for whatever camera the user has.0 -

It's always tempting to suggest that every time these new camera support threads appear.
However I can't imagine that a user contacting both parties to the camera body support project and seeking to discover the potential for action to obtain support could hurt progress and may well help it.
There again if a body manufacturer has already made the sale they have little real incentive to do anything more really.0 -

Most people don’t have the time or inclination to go beyond paying for software and using it. And that’s the way it should be!
Why go through the trouble of convincing, with near zero chance of success, companies to do what the have shown no intention of doing? Capture One will offer support for this or that whenever it becomes attractive or beneficial to Phase One. All users can do is vote with their wallet: buy those products that best meet their needs.
That’s the best, fastest and easiest practical approach.0 -
Actually, I was (or at least I think I was) successful to convince one particular manufacturer to get in touch with Phase One for the appropriate lens and body support, the company is Leica. I have exchanged few emails with software and marketing departments of the Leica and also Phase One as I wasn't happy with the amount of supported lenses. I can't remember which one but sometime during v11, CO have started to support Leica M series lenses heavily and day by day since then they are adding more Leica lenses from M, SL and other lines as well.
On the other hand Olympus is a much bigger company, so how much success you'd have I don't know but it is worth to try, and try again.0 -
I'm waiting for M1X support too. 0 -
Also waiting for E-M1X support. It is somehow weird that they already implemented the support for the new Fuji camera which wasnt even released yet, and on the other hand the new Oly pro cam is NOT supported.
All the arguments above stating that "it takes time" is dumb blah blah.
The following software products already support the E-M1X, just to mention a few:
Lightroom
On1
ACDSee
Luminar
As a semi-pro, I urgently need RAW support for my cam. Currently, I really feel pissed off. Thats the wrong strategy to deal with customers. Adobe got me back.0 -

Well, Phase One have special arrangements with Fuji (and with Sony) which is why there are dedicated Fuji (and Sony) versions of Capture One. It may be, for example, that those manufacturers provide more assistance, advance copies of cameras etc, than is available for Olympus.

I‘m looking forward to develop my M1X RAW-files with C1 in the near future. It‘s hard to wait ... 0 -
Great, 12.03 now supports M1X-RAW files- thx 😊
Two additional wishes for M1X:
- please, support HighRes RAW
- please, support tethering0 -
