Tethering Stopped Working - Reinstall Won't Work
I opened a ticket but wanted to see if anyone else had this issue and if someone knew of a solution. The following is what I sent to support:
I have successfully tethered my Sony A7RIII to my Surface Book 2 for many shoots without a problem until 7/13/19. Everything has worked without a hitch including live view. No changes to the camera settings, tethering method, etc. were made. As of 7/13/19, although Capture One recognized the camera, could see camera settings and trigger the camera, the image would not write to the laptop and appear in Capture One (the image would write to the camera's SD card).
To test if this were a camera problem, I attached it to my Surface Studio desktop using the same version of Capture One. It worked without a problem. (So I eliminated the possibility of this being a camera or cable problem.) I also took my back up A7RIII and attached it to the Surface Book 2 and had the same problem. Both cameras are set in the exact same way and both used to work on both the Surface Book 2 and Surface Studio. So the problem is isolated to the Surface Book 2/Capture One combination.
Other than this issue with Capture One, no other problems exist with the Surface Book 2 and Windows is updated.
I tried numerous solutions, none which worked. So I finally decided to uninstall/reinstall Capture One. After installation, the "old" list of sessions appeared but would not start. I tried to start a "new" session but Capture one would no start it. I received the message, "Unable to open "Untitled Session". Capture One was unable to open "Untitled Session". Error: The document could not be created. (I tried different names for the sessions but it made no difference.)
I attempted to uninstall/reinstall again and got an error code on setup: "IPersistFile::Save failed; code 0x8007002. The system cannot find the file specified.
I looked up the error code which indicated a possible hard drive problem (I have an SSD). I ran chkdsk and repair as directed. No errors were found and the hard drive is healthy. This error is not showing up with any other program running on the laptop (btw, the laptop is only 4 months old) and no other program is having any problems.
As of this point, I cannot get Capture One installed and running. I deactivated the license on the website thinking that the new install of Capture One should not have found my "old" sessions (I deleted all image files and capture one files that I could find). I thought maybe that is what is getting it to stick. So if there are hidden files somewhere that are not routinely removed during uninstall (I used Windows add/remove app as well as Capture One's uninstall routine and both completed without a hitch), perhaps that is it; however, I don't know where to look (if this is the case, tell me the process to find them and delete them).

There is already a thread about this subject
The problem comes from the V 1903 update of windows 10.... Capture One do no more recognized his digital back, even if they are well recognized by win 10 (they appears as "working" in Win 10, and the Firewire Card is also recognized as "working", but C1 has lost contact with them ?)
You have to reinstall a previous version of Win 10 if you have a backup
Each 6 month, i clone the first disk of my computers and so, in case of problem, i replace the first disk with the cloned disk which contains a previous version of Win 10 ...
It's what I have done yesterday ... and have to reinstall all the upgrade of programs which were made from the last clonage.
So, I use now version 1803 of Win 10 (in place of 1903 which has been installed automatically 15 days ago) ... and i can again shoot in tethering mode with my Phase One Backs
Once operational, you have to stop the "automatic upgrade processing of windows" ...
In the commande bar (execute) .... type services.msc >enter> ... a window will open and you look the "windows update" feature and you disable it .... so, v1903 will no more be automatically installed.
Once Phase ONe will habe found a solution .... you will have to rechange "windows update" feature0 -
I'm somewhat astonished that nobody else speak about this problem.
There is already more than 15 days that I have contacted Phase One, and that they have answered that they had just discovered this problem and that they were working to find a solution ... In the meantim, they recommand to roll back to a previous version of Win 10 (not the v1903 which causes the issue).
But, Phase One do not communicate publicaly over this problem however0 -
Wow, 2 years ago. I have a similar problem with a Windows 10 Dell laptop. Shooting tethered during headshots. Randomly the images stop coming in. I then have to insert the SD card into the computer to import. No way to get them straight from the camera.
