Best Version of OSX for tethering Nikon D810
Hi all, I've recently been experiencing highly erratic problems with tethering a Nikon D810. I've tried many different cables, only have Nikon selected as the camera provider. I haven't tried a Tetherboost pro or other power-managed USB controller, but am considering ordering this soon.
Among random tethering issues, one thing I've noticed that may be indicative of some specific issue:
I see sometimes that shooting very slowly, the camera remains connected, but a moderate 'burst' of images causes the connection to drop. I've managed to re-create this problem and it doesn't have anything to do with the physical connection (cables).
The computer is a MacBook Pro Retina mid 2015, El Capitan 10.11.6
I've been running Capture One 9 since it released (until the last year has been extremely reliable). Have also recently trialled Capture One 11 but with similar results.
Anyone have any thoughts?
As well as purchasing a powered USB controller, I'm also considering updating OSX. Any D810 users have advice / experience with particular OSX versions?
I saw somebody in another post mention a mismatch between Nikon's USB firmware for the D810 and the USB El Capitan's USB drivers. This is beyond my knowledge, so any advice here would be really super appreciated! 😄

What length of USB cables are you using?
Have you tried all of the USB ports on your computer with the same results?
I'd suggest to make sure the firmware on the D810 is the latest version, if it is maybe try to reinstall an older version to see if anything changes. Other than that try updating your Mac OS.
I shoot tethered using a D800 without issue in C0 9, 10, & 11, this on a mid 2015 Macbook pro Retina as well with High Sierra (worked fine in Sierra as well). I generally use the tether tools USB 3 16ft extension with the USB 3 cable that came with the camera.0 -
This is very liket not a Capture One issue, but a hardware one.
Most liket culprits are the usb-port on the D810 (always use the brace, If you haven’t done so from when you got the camera, it very likely to get a loose fit with all sorts of wierd issues to follow), the quality of cable, and the cable length.0 -
I use this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0179MXKU8/
other usb cables that were not powered I had issues with and at least for me this solved it
reckon its about the same thing as the tether tools branded one but way cheaper
also I use the plastic mount thing that came with the D810 to hold cable into the camera much better support that way0
