Panasonic G9 file reading
I have just downloaded a couple of files off the internet from the new Panasonic G9, a standard file and one of the new High Resolution files to see what they look like. Neither will open in CO 10 though appear as RW2 files which can be opened when from a previous Panasonic camera. I assume that there are some differences in the file format so was wondering how long PhaseOne normally take to bring out an update that will allow the files to be opened.
Thanks
Jonathan

While we don't comment on future product development, you're more than welcome to request support for the Panasonic G9 via a case, via the link in my profile. 0 -
Thanks ben_US. I have raised a query as you suggest out of interest but would still be interested if anyone has experience of how long in general this process takes.

You're SOL.
From basic research I can see that most cameras for which interest was shown, happen to be supported within 2-3 months from the camera's shipping date.
You can also find that the G8 support was included in an update about 3 months after it's release.
Considering that the G9 is due for mid January, you'd probably be looking into April.0 -

I discovered a trick way back when I had a G1 and CO wasn't supporting it yet.
If you open a Panasonic RW2 file with a hex editor like "010 Editor" or "wxHex Editor", near the beginning of the file you will find two places where the name of the camera is present, like this: Panasonic DMC-GX7
I found that if you edit the camera name and change it to the name of a camera that is already supported, then Capture One will try to open the file. You should be carefull to replace characters, not add or delete them.
In that case I believe I replaced "GM1" with "G5 ", and then Capture One had no trouble opening the RW2 file.
You do this at your own risk. I reccomend that you use an empty catalog or session for this. If the file contains some new coding, Capture One may do something unpredictable, perhaps even crash.0 -
I would like to add that if you have a Panasonic camera you may not find yourself particularly well supported in Capture One.
For example, the Metedata view for JPEGs does not report the lens name, which is actually quite inconvient if you have several lenses, with overlapping ranges of focal length. I've been asking Capture One to show the Lens Name for JPEGs since 11/2015 but to no avail. They did fix the RAW but not JPEG. Now, when I raise a ticket they they agree that it's a known problem, it's on the bug list, and close the ticket.
Exif info that's missing for JPEG Images- Serial
- Firmware
- Lens Name
- Flash Compensation
- Drive Mode
- White Balance

Patience is likely to be required! Thanks for the info.

Eric,
I am well into Panasonic so will stick with it. A long term user of Lightroom, I got dissatisfied with it and tried Capture One, have not used LR since! Hopefully things will change over time. I only take RAW so do not miss too much of the Exif data.
I might try your trick for getting Capture One to read the file from one of the G9 files I downloaded to see if it works.
Thanks for your replies, very helpful.

Good call on the hex editor!
It's worth a try. 😊0 -
I downloaded a G9 RAW file, with wxHEX Editor I replaced "G9 " with "GH5" in two places (Search for "Pana") and begorra, COP10 opened the file. 0 -

Interesting. I have tried doing the same but get a corrupted file. You can just see the image outline but mainly just a sea of coloured dots!0 -

That could be the OpenCL engine. Try to turn Hardware Acceleration to Never.
Also, I would not add any space or character when swapping hexadecimal values. Try simply changing to "G8"0 -

Considered racist by the very evil and disingenuous people the meme seeks to expose.0
