CPU/GPU
I'm on a 16" MBP with the top CPU/GPU. I'm trying to figure out why generating previews is taking so long when neither CPU/GPU is being taxed. I have checked all my settings etc, it's really just C1 not taking advantage of the hardware as far as I can tell. Any ideas? Isn't the answer always "get a better system"?

FWIW I see similar processor/GPU use on my 2019 iMac. 0 -
Unfortunately, CO is not well optimized for GPUs. There are lots of posts about this. Another fact, it is using a dated OpenCL version, which in total is not even supported by Apple now. 0 -
I’m sad to hear the 16†MBP isn’t blazing fast! I’m looking towards buying one later this month. That said, C1 documentation says that RAM is what makes the biggest difference in preview generation.
“ - Preview Update with different settings, styles etc: RAM
- Sorting/Rating: CPU cores and SSD speed
- Fit image to Screen: GPU cores
- Process time: GPU processing units and CPU's and RAMâ€
I know you said your CPU/GPU were fully upgraded, but what about your RAM?0 -

thanks for this info. 32gb of ram, using less than 25% of that and maybe half of the 8gb vram mostly.
This computer is fast for other things. I just can’t understand why this software is still so poor for everything except actual finished results.0 -

IMO, "Preview Update with different settings, styles etc" means how fast the photo in the viewer & browser refreshes to adjustments instead of first time preview generating.
Preview generating seems like it would go under "process time".0 -
There have been a number of recent threads about C1 12 performance under Mojave and Catalina. Did you look at those? One even had input a day or 2 ago.
Try forcing the GPU by turning off Automatic Graphics Switching in Energy Saving. That may get you about 30-50% improvement in preview generation performance—it did for me on 2 MBPs running Mojave.0 -
i have triple checked my settings, reinstalled, restarted etc. 0
