Honestly, from the first glance, the feature list does not look very promising from my perspective. I can not find any reason to spend the steep upgrade fee! 0 -
I personally think that some of the improvements along with other new features justifies this upgrapde price - my two cents.
Nonetheless, I do hope that my MacPro with my GeForce GTX980 Ti will work with hardware acceleration enabled.

Beware that this version doesn´t run an 10.10 (yosemite) and older version of OSX 0 -
I have installed it on my MacPro with El Capitan
Started showing some really strange behavior, it would start scrolling through all of the images in the library very quickly until the end, then when trying to select an image it would immediately crash, then of course the crash report would also crash, which is kind of ironic, did this twice, seems to be stable "for now" with the "Open CL" acceleration turned off.
I do have a "PC" GTX 660. Phase One does not seem to support the "non Mac" cards even though the Mac OS supports them now. I will give it a try for a while and see how it goes with Open CL turned off.
I think this may be normal behavior when opening a session from a previous version, it seems to automatically run through the session and update, funny to watch the quick slide show, seems to work OK, with 9 I only had to turn off Open CL in processing and not display but now I have to turn off both. I wish they would support more video cards but I guess it does not pay to do it0 -

I wonder why this is not made clear anywhere on the web site? This page lists System Requirements only for Capture One versions 4-9. https://www.phaseone.com/en/SupportMain ... s/FAQ.aspx
So I assume the range for Mac is OS X 10.11 or better?0 -

I only upgraded to 9 in October. Im sure it used to be every 2 years a chargeable update was released! Now it means another 99euro!! 0 -
…if you click on a top level folder does it finally show the contents of the entire folder (including the sub folders)?? This continues to be a huge annoyance for me in 9.3.
Also, how are managed catalogs? Are they actually an option for larger libraries now?

Any proper support for Fuji Xpro2 and the XT2 compressed support 0 -

While I haven't tried out v10 yet, the consensus and requests at least in this community have been stability & performance over features. So I hope this is indeed the case, which would make it worth the upgrade for many. In previous versions, new features were sometimes also added in the .x releases, so there could be more coming further down the line.0 -

Then don't do it! There is no obligation to upgrade and if v9 does all you want, stay with it. If in due course we get to a version (for example v12) that has accumulated sufficient added features/improvements to make it of benefit then download it at that point in its development.0 -

It used to be about every 18 months but based on comments from back then people wanted ever faster developments that included new technology updates which could really only be accommodated by significant re-engineering with the latest development tools. Effectively this enforces changes that only make sense as new versions rather than point releases.
In that way the development cycle is forced to speed up and shorten the period between releases from a technical point of view.
There are also commercial considerations, as there always have been in the software industry, about when new products are required. The move to subscription models of payment, widespread in the industry as users elect to take the option to rent their software rather then "buy" it, has had some effect on the dynamics of new version releases.
Likewise other factors - Apple's OSX update schedule and discontinuing support for older versions as well as enforcing the need for developers to adapt existing products (or develop new ones) will also be influential.
All in all I think we will see the software industry settle into an annual (approximately) release strategy for the next few years. We may as well get used to it or accept that our options probably involve using the output from open source development projects.
My view of the world FWIW.

Oh wait two things
1) you don't have to upgrade...
2) to develop software cost money, lots of money...0 -

This! Exactly!
If I was a software developer I suspect the only way to stay sane would be to avoid the company user forum completely.

I bought Capture One in May 2016. If I buy a software there should be at least 12 months (better: 24) of small upgrades, bugfixes etc. I can understand that I have to pay for a large step in developement with new features. Nevertheless in that case there should be ongoing bugfixes and support for new lenses for Capture One 9.
For me, that means that I recently bought a new software (Capture One 9) and after six months I get no further upgrades for new lenses that I am waiting for. If I want upgrades or support for new lenses (the Sony Sel 1018 for example), I have to buy that software again for nearly the same price. Sorry, but that is far from customer-friendly for me and I think will switch to another software then.0 -

It's somewhere in the middle. You don't want to blindly follow every bitch and nit…but…a smart company should absolutely keep their ear to the ground.
Case in point, as dredlew pointed out:
"the consensus and requests at least in this community have been stability & performance over features."
IMHO if C1P could nail the library/catalog & organization/performance issues they would leave the competition in the dust.0 -

CO 9 have been out for 12 months.
There is a 1 month grace period for recent CO9 buyers.
You don't have to pay the same price again (full price), but get a very substantial price reduction upgrade price, when going from V9 to V10.
You also have the subscription to look to as an option.0 -

But there is always the chance of taking a hit (if that is how you see it) when taking out a licence part way through a version life. That is true for any company that I am aware of and part of the reason for differential pricing for upgrades and, as from the release of V9, the option to deploy the software on 3 devices at the same time if paying full price rather than Sony discounted price. Note too that technical support is a free service should you need it.
You would avoid that with the increasingly common (and sometime enforced) subscription model but there will always be debates about the advantages and disadvantages of subscription vs "ownership".
Alternatively there is always an option to discover what is available by way of free products developed by Open Source enthusiasts.
And as far as I am aware buying new camera bodies or lenses is not compulsory. However it is, usually, far more expensive than obtaining enhanced software that makes the hardware more usable.
Just my observations, for what they are worth.

CO 9 have been out for 12 months.
That my be true. I recently bought CO9 in May 2016. My fault?
As I said: I fully understand that I have to pay for developement and substantial new features. But as a customer I would expect at least 12 month of basic updates and in my opinion the support for new lenses (that are not really new on the market but just recently supported by capture one) should be included.
I am a sony user and bought the software with the expectation that really commen sony lenses like the 55-210 or the 10-18 are supported in the future. That expectation may be justified because Sony "recommands" that software. Now they are supported but I have to pay for it again. You don't have to pay the same price again (full price), but get a very substantial price reduction upgrade price, when going from V9 to V10.
I dont know the price for the regular version, for Capture One Pro (for Sony) from V9 to V10 its 40 Euros instead of 50 Euros which is 80% of the regular price.0 -

Well, 50 Euros is a very heavily discounted price to start with and your update is still much less than a full Pro update.
Yes my Pro version allows me to work with multiple RAW file sources .... but like you I only have one camera brand (not Sony though.)

If you were so concerned about your investment, then your fault was not checking when v9 was released or when it would be updated again. If a product has been released for several months already, you obviously get less bang for your buck. That's the case for any software or hardware.
As for expecting any kind of continued update for an older version of software, that only applies to the biggest of software houses like Microsoft, Apple, etc. For anything else, it's reasonable not to expect further updates as it's not economical for a smaller software company to maintain multiple versions.
On price; everyone else is paying full price of $299 for first time purchase and $99 upgrade thereafter (about every year). With your Sony, you are getting an absolute bargain! You really don't have any reason to complain.0 -
How long is the upgrade offer of $99 valid?
Thanks!0 -
I believe it is valid indefinitely, or at least until version 11 comes along!

Oh my. Do you get mad at Volkswagen when they release the next-year model 6 months after you purchased a car from them?
Software moves along at a rapid pace now-a-days. You’ve been using it and enjoying it for at least 6 months now. If you want to gain support for new lenses, then you have to move to the latest software. Otherwise, enjoy what you decided to purchase when you made the decision to buy.
And as for the price, you’re complaining about 40 euros? I’ll finish this post with the same words I started it with: oh my.0 -

I recognise that this is a difficult issue for software developers. If I were one, I would want to be nudging customers towards a software rental model with it's more predictable revenue flow. If this update is more about performance and stability improvements as somebody suggested earlier, then it should be a no cost point release.
Taking a more pragmatic view, it would seem I have to factor this into my already stretched fixed business costs.0 -
