We are fellow users, and we can't grant your request. I agree that it would be a nice idea, so why don't you suggest it to Phase One in a support case?

    Hi.

I see more and more people like me that go to C1 also uses affinity photo.
It would be a tremendous help is I could make a round trip to affinity and back in it native file format.

    Please consider this

I suspect that when Affinity's market share and usage matches that of Photoshop the use of their proprietary file type (assuming they allow it to be used by third parties) might become commercially viable.

Until such time that may not be the case.

I suppose it might also be worth contacting Serif to see if they could help to facilitate some level of interworking.

Any reason why you can't round-trip in tiff format rather than aphoto format?

You can, of course, and you probably would take it into Affinity as a tiff. But when you have done some work on an image in Affinity, you may want to save that work as an .afphoto file, and it would be nice to be able to view that in Capture One.

I've used Affinity Photo on Windows since Day One of its release, Ian (I even did some testing of pre-release versions) - I'm asking why it would be nice to see an aphoto file in Cap One - what does that give you over saving the Affinity image as a tiff, which Capture One can see?

    Hi Keith

I guess it's mainly that if I do save an .afphoto file (I don't always - sometimes I just save the modified tiff) I would save it in the same folder, and it is nice to be able to see all the contents of the folder in C1 - both to know what is there and for ease of moving stuff somewhere else if needed, without leaving the .afphoto behind, or having to move it outside of C1 afterwards. After all, I believe you can see .psd files in C1 if you use Photoshop rather than Affinity. It's no big deal, but I only supported the idea because I thought that I would probably find it a convenience.

An additional thought to add to my previous post.

C1 and Affinity both offer ways for people to avoid the Adobe approach to things if said people would prefer to take such avoidance.

Might than mean that a disproportionate (compared to the whole world view) number of C1 users also have (and use) Affinity?

If so the benefits of being able to do something with afphoto spec files might be mutually beneficial.

Maybe people have already looked into that.

Mutually beneficial for users does not necessarily imply that it would also be commercially beneficial.

    Thanks, Ian.

Let's see if the OP can explain his preference for aphoto over tiff.

Not the OP and not, yet, an Affinity Photo user... Wouldn't the aphoto format mean that all native adjustments would be preserved so you could go back to Affinity Photo and make more changes from where you left off. Seems like what most people would like to do. Does Affinity Photo have a way of saving to tiff and also preserving all of its internal information? It seems like it can save and read the PSD format so my thought was to round trip using PSD.

I agree with the OP that full support for aphoto format would be nice. I'll have to go make that request to support.

I thought PSD was the recommended route for round tripping to Affinity, it works for me.

Yes, you can do that. But why round-trip to Affinity in Photoshop format? No-one would suggest you should round-trip to Photoshop using Affinity format! If PSD can be supported why not Affinity format too? Otherwise it just prolongs the Photoshop monopoly - every one uses it because every one uses it because every one assumes that every one has to use it.

I have the complete Affinity Suite and If the Affinity .aphoto extension was recognized I would be delighted!
PSD is no alternative for the Affinity users, because it's still not a 100% working like in my Photoshop.

I am with you, Ian. Many C1 users need a "pixel editor" for operations that are not within the scope of C1, I even think PhaseOne staff do. Affinity apparently fits a niche where C1 users can get a capable and affordable pixel editor. I have installed Affinity on my computer and I have watched some tutorials, but I have not used it much yet. I should probably get the book. I still use PS 5...

Bearing in mind the number of people currently moving away from the clutches of Adobe, I would have thought it a natural progression for C1 to work seamlessly with .afphoto, but no, apparently (from all the negative remarks here) it's logical to convert an image you're working on within Affinity, to a .tiff..?
    (Walks away, scratching head).

I agree it would be a natural step. I suppose that if enough users ask for it they might do it. It wasn’t very long ago that PSD support was introduced.

What is it that people will want to do with a .afphoto (or .psd) within C1?

For viewing purposes a PSD is flattened. Presumably an afphoto file would also be flattened.

As far as I understand things there are limited options for adding any form of recognisable edit layers to a psd on output. Presumably it would be the same for afphoto files.

I would guess that, currently, the exodus from Adobe software frequently mentioned here is probably not as great as it may appear and that despite the ever improving Affinity application suite, the market share is still relatively small and many people, as mentioned above and myself included, have the program but rarely use it. Or maybe only use it for specific purposes. So how big is the active user demand?

When that situation changes there may come a time when supporting the afphoto standard (which I note from the Affinity 1.7 update notes is still developing in terms of psd compatibility - the industry reference point) that file type support (and continued maintenance of it) becomes a worthwhile exercise. Maybe that point is approaching quite soon .... maybe not.

How many users extensively deploying both C1 and Affinity afphoto files would it need to make the combination a significant and widely appreciated advancement (with associated support costs)? Only Phase will know the answer.

It would seem like a good idea for anyone deeply interested in the suggestion to ensure that they have registered the desire with the C1 Development team via the Support Case system. That way it can be prioritised along with everything else users ask for.
