Provide option to 'Overwrite Previously Exported Images' in Export Window
ImplementedPlease guys. This request has been floating around on the forum for at least 9 YEARS that I can see. Surely after this amount of time and many requests, it could be implemented. :-(

Indeed, I found a respective request from nine years ago.
It makes one wonder what the hesitation is about if even the "Image Alchemist" Paul Steunebrink endorsed the request back then.
It is unfortunate that there is no feedback as to why such a productivity increasing improvements are not implemented. With such respective feedback, we'd
- perhaps be able to clear up a misunderstanding.
- be able to make suggestions to counteract concerns.
- not have to waste our time to formulate the request, if it has already been deemed unacceptable for all eternity.
Users have put the notion forward that allowing exported files to be overwritten would go against the spirit of "non-destructiveness". However, this is clearly not a valid point.
- Non-destructiveness pertains to editing operations, not file management.
- Capture will delete (original!) files upon request. This is incompatible with never affecting the files of a user.
- There is an unfixed usability issue which will allow users to accidentally delete an image.
Of course it is correct to be cautious when it comes to executing irreversible operations. However, in my request, I offered a three-step safety net:
- The option to use overwriting during export needs to be enabled in the preferences first.
- Overwriting during export requires opting in during exporting (i.e., the first step above only enables the opt-in option; it does not activate it yet).
- A warning dialog appears before any files are actually overwritten.
In my view, the last step should involve an option "Never show this dialogue" again because the software is made for adults and the latter should take responsibility if an exported file gets overwritten by accident, given that at one point in time multiple hurdles had to be taken to make that happen.
It is worthwhile remembering that we are talking about exported files not originals. If a variant capturing the state of the exported image still exists then the exported image can be re-generated at any point in time.
It would make more sense for Capture One to never delete an original file but to allow the deletion/overwriting of generated files. Yet, the opposite holds true.1 -
I agree wholeheartedly. Seems to be a win of ideology which ignores practicality, 'user experience' and providing one's customers (who keep the company in business) with the tools they need.
