    Hi Mathew,

Check out this thread from syncrasy a while back on the subject: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360012416878-Running-Media-Pro-virtually-on-macOS-Catalina-or-later-

I think it is possible using Parallels, but not natively on Catalina.

I am in the same boat as you. I'm still on High Sierra with MP.

    hi Mathew and Carey

I have the same situation.  I would like to upgrade to Big Sur but I've been stuck on Mojave because Media Pro is still the best cataloging software out there.  Any updates on a 32-bit workaround?  Have either of you tried Parallels?  I read the thread referenced by Carey -- it seems that VM Fusion is not ideal.

    thx

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Nice to meet a fellow diehard. I am hanging in there with High Sierra for now and still using Media Pro. I recently looked at pricing for Parallels, there is a subscription model and I think the perpetual license will run you $99. I haven't had to try it yet, but that's been in my head as the way forward when I do have to upgrade OS.

Every now and then I do a field survey of the other options out there to replace Media Pro and I always come crawling back.

    hi Carey

Thanks for getting back.  Yes, besides the extra cost, there's also the space consideration for me, if I need to install two systems.  Have your tried Photo Mechanic Plus (beta)?  Im a long time user of the basic Photo Mechanic for ingest and captioning but have been put off by the Plus cataloging because, last time I checked, it won't convert my hundreds of Media Pro mpcatalogs.

    Hi Mark,

Photo Mechanic Plus is out of beta and available for purchase, so if you are a long time user and comfortable with the interface it's totally worth a look. Hundreds of mpcatalogs, wow – you must be wrangling a ton of images!

Syncrasy has made a bunch of really helpful comments / posts in the Camera Bits forums geared toward questions from MP refugees, if you search for his username you will find them.

I did do the trial and haven't pursued it further yet – for these reasons among others (maybe some of these are changed by now)

Drag and drop of images between collections isn't supported

The "truth is in the file" rather than the catalog – annotating your images "touches" the actual file rather than maintaining those edits within the catalog file. Among other things, this means offline annotating is not supported.

Interface – I try not to knock interfaces til I've lived with them and learned their quirks but I found it to be opaque. When you click on an image in MP the collections it's in lights up orange. Could not see a way to determine that right off in PSP.

I will be honest though and say I am sure I didn't give it enough time to properly absorb the paradigm!

I am another long time iView/Media Pro user (first purchase was in 2002) and was wary that its lifetime was limited. So, a couple years ago I started researching alternatives and trialed several packages, including PhotoSupreme, PhotoMechanic, Digikam, Neofinder, Bridge, Elements Organizer, a couple others that I have forgotten, and now Capture One. None has the flexibility as a DAM as MP had; so many features were missing in every other app that I knew I wouldn't be happy with any of them. C1 comes about as close to MP as any but is way too complex for my needs. Maybe with more time ...

Along the way, I remained in Mojave so that I wouldn't lose functionality with MP. And after having giving up hope finding a suitable alternative, I decided that I would upgrade my aging iMac and bought a new one. My plan was to keep the older system on Mojave, forever, and have the two computers networked. All image management would be done on the old system and everything else I do would be on the new one.

All that fell apart when, within weeks of my purchase, the hard drive on my old mac failed. All media and most everything else was backed up so I didn't lose anything precious. And I am now the owner of a shiny new SSD installed in the old iMac and it runs almost as fast as the new computer! Yet, still in Mojave. I re-installed both iView and MediaPro (a long search for the installers is another story) but realized, sadly, that my backup did not include several years of email. Bottom line: I no longer have the registration/serial numbers that would allow me to use either of these apps. So, I am back to evaluating alternative software. Sigh.

With a trial license of iView, I was able to sync annotations on all my images in dozens of catalogs. That trial has run out; I have yet to start the trial on MP and won't until desperate. In the meantime, I have begun importing catalogs into C1 with the hope that I will learn enough about it to adapt. Another thought occurred to me based on what another forum member mentioned. Since I have an extra computer now that is, and will continue to be, in Mojave, if I had a license for MP, my grand plan would work. Just need to find someone who is definitively abandoning MP and would be willing to share/sell their license.

Currently spending time with C1 and reading the sad stories of other MP refugees.
    Scott

Hi Scott, I’m so sorry this happened to you. What a nightmare!
I am guessing you already tried the instructions on this page to retrieve your MP license? https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002656917-Media-Pro-Licenses

Do report back on how you fare with C1

edit: not sure if my name is showing above but this is Carey.

    Carey,

Thanks for this. I did not upgrade to Phase One MediaPro so I fall into the second question in that link.

    @Scott

What is the version you're trying to get a license key for? iView, Expression Media, or Media Pro?

So far as I know it was only called Media Pro after Phase One purchased Expression Media from Microsoft and changed the name. So I'm a little confused by your reply but maybe you can clarify. A version number would also be helpful.

My original purchase in 2002 was of iView. After Plum took over, the name was eventually changed to iView MediaPro. I have the license code for iView but lost my license to iView MediaPro when my hard drive failed. I was able to find an installer for iView Media Pro version 3.1 and have run it successfully on Mojave under a trial version. It is this version that I was using before the failure and was hoping to resurrect by somehow obtaining a license.

Ah! I have learned something today. So the version you have predates even Microsoft's fingers on it.

Let me do a little thinking.

I balked at upgrading to the Microsoft version after reading some less than satisfying reviews.

A friend has the Phase One version of Media Pro and I have used it a little and find it very similar to the iView MediaPro version. If I could obtain a license for this MP version, my plan for a DAM on Mojave would still work.

BTW, this was helpful to me in trying to understand the evolution of the software: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase_One_Media_Pro
