Capture One 21 lags
I have updated to the Version 21 and am using it on a MacBook Pro with a Radeon Pro 5500M. I like the new features, however I experience some consierable lag in many cases when starting to make an adjustment. For example when I start dragging the brightness slider or the contrast slider it takes some time (about half a second) till the image updates. This is not a lot of time, but it happens very often with most sliders, really annoying and disturbs the workflow. I have reactivated Version 20 and no lag there, everything as before so seems to be an issue with 21.
Can this be fixed, please!

I Can confirm these issues. And it is getting worse if you are using a second monitor.
I wrote a report (submit request) about these issues and wait for a comment.

Yes, this is exactly what happens (with exposure, brightness and whatever). When trying the same process and same photo in version 20, all goes smoothly. So not only there is no reasonable new feature here, but it also works worse in general. Really well spent money :(

I experience exactly the same. I see the small beachball evey time I touch a slider. Perpective corrections was even more worse and impossible to work with.
For the moment I gave up since I need to get work done so instead I restored the disc image to go back to CO20 which works fine and fast on my system (Mac pro trashcan 2013).
I guess they are aware that many people complain about speed but nevertheless I also opened a ticket so they have an "official" feedback. Will not make much of a difference I'm afraid.
With all software versions they published the first itteration was bad. Mainly slow and sluggish. This was the same for CO11-C012 and C20. After few updates they figured it out and system got more faster and stable. This is however not the way it should be in my view. But I guess the sales numbers need to be as good as possible.
I rather see a 2 year upgrade where they have more time for good features but more important good relaiblity and speed.
The 140 euro I spend will be booked as loss in my accounting system.
Maybe they should purchase the company who makes photomechanics? and combine that with capture one pro.
If capture one cannot get their act together I possibly go away and move to a combination of Photomechanics with some other editng sowftare (like Affinity photo which I already use) This way I have best of both worlds.
Let's wait and see what they say about my opened ticket.

I have a 2018 MBP 13" with the quad-core i7 and 16GB RAM (top spec), running macOS Big Sur 11.1, and since upgrading to CO21, there has been a MARKED reduction in performance, ESPECIALLY when I connect my LG Thunderbolt Display to it and drag CO21 to that screen.
OMG, the lag in that scenario is ABYSMAL, and that was NOT the case with CO20.
Come on Phase One, get your act together, this is not acceptable for a premium, professional-grade DAM. I switched over from Adobe Lightroom to escape crap like this, not get it handed to me even worse!

Yep, an ever renewed bad surprise.
No worries, some additional financial charge will follow soon

Just to give an update. I installed the new version 14.0.1, before it was 14.0.0.275, there ist still the same lag on my machine (running Catalina).

Update to slow system or laggy response.
When I select proof profile 'No profile' or 'Adobe RGB' all issues are gone.
Looks like people who like to print have these issues.

Thanks for the idea. I tried it, selected No profile, that alone got a bit better, and then it seemed another bit faster to me when I deselcted all process recipes. But still, there is some lag compared to 20. Capture One 20 works great both with my custom ICC profile selected and with "No proofing". I got an answer from the CO customer support. They suggested using a new Catalog, but that also did not help.
Update: at first I thought there was no change, but that in fact made the speed a bit better. I mean the same menu, I have a custom ICC proofing profile for my printer.

I think there is a misunderstanding.
I changed the proof profile: View -> 'Proof Profile' -> Adobe RGB (or No profile).
But maybe you have additional issues. I had opened ticket on Saturday and wait for an answer.

"Maybe they should purchase the company who makes photomechanics? and combine that with capture one pro"
only if you want to become photomechnic destroyed as iview and shitty as c1.

Hello??? Is there ANYONE even WORKING for PhaseOne in the C1 division anymore other than your useless marketing guy???
The performance issues are literally SO BAD that the process of culling images (without even editing) is taking 5-10x longer than with C1P 20!!!
I cannot BELIEVE you had the balls to increase your prices for what amounts to BETA software!
GET THIS FIXED, or I'm going back to Adobe, turns out they at least communicate and do release bug fixes from time to time!!!

c1 got totally overhyped in the last years as a software and as a company so maybe this is a reason why so many now feel disappointed but all of the shortcomings are in fact not really new. bugs had been ignored for years, the price was raised massively before, the software was never as stable as adobe. the former owner made a huge profit but obvious saw no need to hire more developers and the new owner seems to thinks marketing and overpriced presets are the way to go…. 2021 will bring without a doubt a boost for dxo, adobe and others.....

@CSP,
To be fair, C1P was actually a VERY good piece of software up until v21 (14); I switched when it was still version 12, and that version, along with 13, whilst they obviously had issues (every piece of software does), none of them were the show stopping performance lag of version 14.
Unti now, I was very happy with my switch to C1P from LR, but I'm seriously questioning that change, and considering moving BACK to LR unless PhaseOne get their act together and fix the performance problems of version 14.
Hopefully, when they do fix it, I WILL NOT be upgrading to their newer versions until MUCH later in the release cycle. I've learned my lesson this time jumping on board at a .0 version release!

c1 is still not a bad software but it is handicapped by the unsolved issues and bugs. but I also see on an more subtile level that they added more and more unasked improvements with basic tools. luma NR adds sharpening, the HDR tool now adds a lot of local contrast enhancement, exposure changes saturation like no other converter...... without a doubt this can benefit some images but for me were almost all images get retouched this has become an real issue.

When the 21 version was released I installed the update where it replaced the 20 version.(with big Sur)
When I then started CO21 the first time it was extremely slow. Mac Pro (Trashcan 2013) with Big Sur.Next what I did is COMPLETELY erased my MAC and installed Big Sur from scratch and then all the remaining software that I use. After I had done that CO21 felt smoother and snappier than CO20.
I'm not a programmer but I believe that over time lots of "dirty" files fly around on your computer that slow things down conciderably. It took few hours to get everything installed again but for me it was worth it.
There are still some anoying bugs in this software (like any software) but I'm happy now. Will I upgrade without knowing what I purchased (Not if they will NOT tell us what they will come with) I might just skip a year or 2.
In the end it is all about the image that you took and not about the sowftare that you used. :-)
Hope it helps.

doing a clean install from time to time is for sure a good idea, i also can recommend cocktail as a maintain software, I use it to clear caches or to find corrupt pref files.
regarding bugs, I finished a very large retouching job yesterday working most of the time in affinity photo, did I run into bugs ? yes ! I found one, was it reported before no. how do I know ? because I can search their forum for officially confirmed bugs and problems something c1 does not allow for obvious reasons. the support also picked it up, this kind of opens is great because at the end user and supplier are a team something I don't see here.

Reinstalling the system to update one piece of software... not gonna do that! I really hope Capture One can fix this in the upcoming updates.
I wouln't give all the fault to Capture One though. Apple changes stuff in their XCode environment all the time and now with the transition to M1 and Big Sur there must be a lot for the programmers to figure out.

Update: I just tried the new version, 14.0.2, It seems to me that it's now almost as fast as CO20. It was painfully slow with previous edits, but when I reimported the images and applied exactly the same settings (via custom style) it seems much better than 14.0.1.

Is this lag in the editing a normal behavior in c1? -> https://vimeo.com/553880203/ab3bdb2602
0 -
Not on my Windows based system.
However, no matter whether using Mac or Windows there can be a lot of variables involved in system specification and setup, image file size and complexity (related to how much work the system is having to do to edit and display the data) and a large number of other factors.
The result is that there can be no certain Yes or No answer to your question.

@Kalnins: Watched the video. Sadly this lag has become normal in version 21 (at least for me on Mac and CR3 files from EOS R). You can go to "View"->"Proof Profile"->"Managed by Printer (no proofing)", which speeds up the editing to some extent. However, I finally switched back to version 20, where the sliders you use in your video react in real time!
In one of their advertising emails CaptureOne say that there will soon be a native support for M1 Macs. Does anyone know whether that will also mean finally support for Metal instead of OpenCL?

“We did the move from OpenCL to embracing Apple’s Metal, and for us also, that has been a whole journey of discovery of new capabilities,” Orta says. from a petapixel article.
haha, you can not make this up... took them how many years to find this out ?

@CSP, thanks for pointing this out, great article despite all the marketing talk (found here: https://petapixel.com/2021/05/25/capture-one-details-its-impending-transition-to-native-m1-support/ ). In my eyes now there's really something to look forward to. I do hope that Metal support will also be implemented for the Intel Mac version.
0 -
…..have no doubt that this is the case because openGL Support will be dropped in the future and this effects m1 and intel the same.
0 -
no metal support for intel !
seems c1 is always good for a surprise in disappointing customer....

Yep, just checked the new version (14.2.0), same old lag on an Intel 16" Macbook Pro, back to Version 20 again :)
I'm using Catalina though, because of other software which might have problems with Big Sur. Is there less lag in Big Sur?
I wonder, why they did not move the Intel version to Metal, I thought it's the same "universal" code for both M1 and Intel. Maybe it's cause Intel is like the working horse and they wanted to test the new code only on M1 first and a switch for Intel is coming later... I might be too optimistic though.

Just checked the current version 14.3.0 and the lag seems much better. Might actually switch from 20 to 21 now. Did it get better for anyone else?
