Capture 21 - I'm disappointed

The fact that this forum contributed with a lot of suggestions to make the product better and more adapted to the wishes.

And that nothing I can directly think of has been implemented.

    Totally agree.

This is not an upgrade, this is basically a service update.

What do we get ? A Dehaze function, of which I am not convinced at all. A new keymapping for quick editing. Learning tools, that the vast majority of use won't need or use. "Pro" profiles, that are not even available for Nikon D5 or D6.

    What did we want ?
There is a full forum of it. Larger brushes/cursors, for example, as the current ones are not always very visible. Common lenses, as the Nikon 200-500. Pano stitching. Focus stacking. Contact sheets.
I haven't seen any of it released. Why should we bother commenting ?

And indeed, I will be like you: won't make the mistake of pre-ordering a C1P product before the release anymore.

"andre hilkens: Actually there is a EU law that gives the buyer the right to give something back within 14 days after an online purchase."

I wonder if it applies also here ? It should ?

Well, first you spend money - then only you will see what you bought ;)  (not opposite). And for sure you could have expected something worth the money ... Anyway, everybody has a full right to share his opinion or impression ?

Well, I also prepaid this update. And I am also quite disappointed. I don't see anything new really worth the money paid for it ... Ok, some shortcuts for basic functions, editing photos together ....

    @ Christian Drost

I understand reading complains is not pleasant.

But trying to contribute to a software by suggesting improvements all year long and not seeing them even considered is equally unpleasant.

The way C1P is acting is exactly what causes many companies to fail: they suck as much money as possible from their customer base, but when that one leaves because disgusted, they will be lagging seriously behind the competition to still be viable.

Disregarding the customers mood is a serious mistake in marketing.

sorry folks the only goal p1demonstrated here again is to make as much money from this old code as possible.

I do say this for years,  they don't care about the needs of us user so co21 is just another proof. they did not even address the layer copy problem.  this time all their paid YouTube personalities will not help to cover up the fact that this update is more than  disappointing !

It's no wonder they put such a tight seal on their beta testing if this is the best upgrade they could come up with - there wasn't a whole lot to test and if someone had spilled the beans they'd probably have lost money through no-one paying for it up front. It would have been much better to put their development resources into catching up with the growing backlog of missing lens / camera profiles from the feature request forum. I'm guessing for many of their customers this will potentially be another reason to look elsewhere in future.

In one way, you are right Christian Drost . Yes, no one forced us/me to pay/ oder pre-order the update.

Some people still  believe in "Ethic" and "Honest Behavior". May be these people, me included, are naif...

However, being caught once is enough for me and, may be, for al lot of other people.

    Hi Guys,

Two years ago I decided to completely dispose of Adobe from my computer because the library was full of Adobe junk. With a heavy heart I parted with LR and decided on CO12 as an alternative. The nightmare began already during and after the import of LR (around 100,000 NEF's) to CO12. Almost no longer usable library, search functions ended in a 10-minute beach ball and slider had what felt like a 5 second delay. Library then separated according to travel, nature, events etc. and the problem remained. DAM functionality absolutely underground, GPU support with OpenGL faulty, no "metal support", loading times for libraries a nightmare (iMac i7,128GB, SSD)
Nevertheless I gave CO another chance with CO20, but most of the problems remained, countless software bugs with crashes, functions such as GUI adapting and saving do not work as expected today.

Support lifted, software poor under various quality standards, in short, the customer is degraded to a money machine. And last but not least, the licensing model is absolutely customer-unfriendly, cumbersome and with CO21 without any significant added value.

So why should I upgrade to CO21? Nothing will change, errors will pile up again, because when you read the new threads, everything is the same. Affinity proves that it can be done better with the suite - high-performance, logical, stable and affordable. For the price of the entire suite (AP, AD, APub) I just got a faulty update from CO. I'm absolutely disappointed with the Danish perfection.
What should I do ? Hope that at some point CO20 will run stable on macOS Big Sur and only install every update from Apple if there are no negative threads in the CO support forum. Beautiful new world ! -:)

Are they only joking and will release additional new functions/features soon?

    1
  • Permanently deleted user

    Yes, I think it does.

And yes, they will add new features soon. For C22. For extra money, I guess ?

I seriously consider giving Lightroom another go - if only I could import all my edited pictures

Of course I could have decided not to upgrade and use not the special offer.
But I’m afraid phase one gave wrong impressions.
Note that many companies like capture one make their living from hobbiest and pro amateurs. This is true for ALL camera brands as well.
Probably I go back to capture one 20 because 21 is pretty slow as well.
I wonder who is really happy for what he paid for?

I don’t use catalogs. Instead I use sessions.
After updating to CO21 and playing with it for a few hours I removed it again and went back to CO20 despite I paid for this upgrade.
Version 21 is just too slow on my Mac Pro.
After I had 20 installed again it works like a charm on big sur. Going to leave it for a while like this until capture one staff get their act together.

    Hi Helmut,
I’m fully with you on this.
I followed the same path since some years back now.
However I did not import all images from LR.
I setup sessions instead and started importing images from LR that belonged to that specific session.
It was quit some work but you can do it step by step.
For me this works absolutely fine on CO20.
Next to the sessions I also have 1 catalog were I gather my overall “best” images. These are low res JPG and have the same Filename as in the original session.
If I need a high resolution version I just go to the respective session.
For me it was the possibility of sessions that made me switch 5-6 years back.

Purchasing the upgrade to CO21 was a mistake.
I restored my full HD (with Carbon Copy) so that I’m back with CO20 and runs fine on Big Sur.

Carbon copy I also use for years now to backup sessions to external NAS drives.

    Hope it helps.

hm, maybe but what they dumped today does not look like the are capable of real improvements or innovations. the dehaze filter is in fact really bad far away from what adobe or dxo offer so they are not even smart enough to copy a feature what is around for more than 5 years....

I wonder who is really happy for what he paid for?

I am.   Catalog operations are faster.  Opening my catalog went from about 45 seconds to about 15 seconds.  I can now edit my HEIF/HEIC saving the step of first converting the images to a different file type.  I find speed edits handy in some situations, e.g editing colors in the Color tab and wanting to make a quick adjustment to exposure.  The new easy brush adjustment method is easier for me to use than the older methods, too,

Things I don't care about: tool tips and tutorials.

Overall it is worth the discounted update price I paid.  I don't claim those changes are worth it for anyone else.

45 seconds to 15 seconds opening catalogue ? Hmm, even catalogue of 80GB size opens here in about 3 sec :)  (C1 20)

  • Marco Hyman

How many images?  My catalog is a bit more than 2x that size and currently contains about 46K images.  Catalog is on an internal SSD, images on an external USB3 connected SSD.

Hmm 46 000 images .... this I cannot compete :)) Mine has just few hundred :))

what surprises me is that after years doing the very same, charge more but deliver less and ignore user wishes user feel frustrated now ?  after they ignored to fix the layer copy behaviour which made working with layers far many more difficult than needed it was clear that c1 is totally out of touch with their user base and so it did not come as a surprise that co21 is just another sad release. even their own promoter mr. reiffer seems not really happy with the new dehaze tool what I do understand because  it is not on the same level as their adobe and dxo counterparts. maybe now with all the negative feedback they rethink their course but as a rather arrogant company which probably sees their demanding user more as a plague than business partners  they are probably also unable to start to listen now.

Seems that the only real useful contribution to this version is Dehaze function ? Speed edit etc. is not really that beneficial as it tries to be ....

So they refuse to refund, even after one really tries it just for one day: "Due to our policy, we do not offer refunds for activated software, as we offer a 30-days free trial and you can always try the software to make sure it works for you."

I see the new profiles as a step in the right direction but still not what is needed and the limited number of supported cameras is embarrassing.  the dehaze filter shifts color-balance to much and the tool to select the cast is not really working, overall I think this filter was rushed into the release.

    Agreed on the dehaze.

    It does worse than better.

Using manual improves slightly the situation, but not enough to be convincing.

...dehaze will lead to a lot of discussion,  think the manual tool is just there to blame the user when auto does not work ;-)

long ago when I asked for better Wacom support the answer was our user don't need this. now many years later they came up with new shortcuts for the brush settings, wow this is so f..king ridiculous !  full wacom support is probably an easy to implement improvement  but they ignored it   as almost everything else user have brought up over the years to help make this app better and now user confidence is eroding in an before unthinkable amount.

congratulations to the hiding management, great job !

Well, you certainly had the option to wait and see what was in the update before you bought it.

So what is it you are complaining about? Capture One or your own indiscretion?

  • Christian Drost

I wonder how many people say that this update is crap and wtf...

So then don´t buy it... No one forced you to pay oder pre-order the update... If you pre-order just for fun, then it´s no ones problem.

If you are not satisfied, then stay with your current version or look for alternatives or go back to Adobe?

Where is the problem... Use what is the best choice for you.

What did you expect??? Capture All in One Photoshop?? A brand new All-in-One Solution that redefines editing?

It´s annoying that everyone has to tell their personal frustration in forums and social media...

No one forces you to do spend money on things you don´t like.

    Just my 2 cents
