Unable to create new variants
I have encountered a problem in creating a new variant in Capture One 21.
When I select the new variant option in the browser the variant is not displayed. Instead the image from which I have tried to create it from displayed the number 1 in the top right hand corner. Curiously if I then drag that image into any user collection then the image and its variant is displayed. All images are located on a external SSD drive. The catalogue is in the pictures default location
From my troubleshooting so far it appears to be catalogue specific. If I create a new test catalogue and import a few image from the same external drive I am able to create new variants as normal
Any suggested solutions would be appreciated
Thanks

If you create a new variant (was opposed to a cloned variant) then what you get is a completely unedited new virtual copy of the raw file. One of the effects of this is that for instance any star rating or colour tag is lost. I suspect that if you are looking at the image in a virtual collection of some kind like a smart album that could explain what you see. For instance if I have a smart album of all 5 star images, and create a new variant of one of them it won't appear in the smart album because it doesn't have 5 stars. But if I create a cloned variant, it has all the attributes of the original, including the 5 star rating, so it will appear in the smart album.
If you look at the image in the actual folder it resides in, rather than any user or catalog collection, do you still see the problem?

Thank you for your helpful response. If I filter images by star rating and then select one image for example with a two star rating and try to create a new variant the problem remains. However if I navigate to that same image with the same two stars but directly from the all images folder but with the star rating filter deselected I am able to create the new variant. So the solution would appear to be is to ensure that all star/colour tags are disabled before creating a new variant even if the image still has a rating applied to it.
Not very intuitive although maybe that's just me
Thanks

Frank,
To re-iterate what Ian wrote.
There are 2 options for creating a variant. One is to create an exact copy of the current variant with all settings and IPTC metadata in place. This will appear in any filtered collection (i.e. a smart album) that the source variant appear in since is has the same data to work with.
If, however, you create a brand new variant with no edits or added IPTC data and existing filter rules are likely to be non-applicable. (Camera EXIF data like F-stop, shutter speed, etc. would be available - just to confuse things if you happened to use those as filters.)
Whether or not a freshly created variant will be visible depends on which creation option you chose and whether you are currently working with a filtered selection of images - some sort of album for example - that is selecting the variants visible based on some information added to the variant data as part of your processing that would not be available from the original source file. As described above although the actual filter that does not select the newly created variant may be something less obvious than, say, a star rating.
